God yeah, hard to believe somebody forged a professional career as a left winger and failed to spot that simple pass. I'll comfort myself with the assumption that we would probably still have lost (compared to, say, Ray Houghton at Wembley).

Edit- Ha! Hadn't actually seen OwlFan's post.

On a similar note, McClean's chance to make it 2-0 against Denmark could have seriously altered the course of history also.

It's a bit of a blur but didn't that chance (that McClean scuppered) happen at 1-0? and wasn't there some other late in the game chance that we had to equalise, albeit marginally against the run of play.

McClean played a decent ball across that Lloris got a hand on as well, that might have been at 1-0. The one Stutts is talking about happened directly after conceding I think, so either at 1-1 or 1-2, but I would have thought 1-2. Or it might have even happened right after Duffy's red card, it was a pretty frantic 10-15 minutes!

Long was standing at the back post for the one Lloris got a hand to. if he hadn't it was a sure goal from long

I still think this is the effort Stutts was referring to, because in another tv replay angle you could see that Murphy was perfectly placed to receive the pass and slot the ball neatly into the net. Long was covered by the keeper.
Murphy did well in that game even if denied immortality by McClean.

This is the one where McClean did well - https://youtu.be/ijIrU0rx5qQ?t=6m45s

The other one (that Stutts is referring to) isn't included in that highlights package but basically McClean managed to get in behind, but tried to cut it back when all he needed to do was roll it straight across the goal.

P.S. Why are so many YouTube videos I watch zoomed in too much (and is there a cure)?

It's the video itself, zoomng in like that gets around YouTube's automatic content scanners for copyrighted video

That's it so. McClean's blooper has been wiped out from recorded video history, along with Murph's almost moment of glory.

Murphy was involved in both McClean chances, he nearly got his boot to the ball in the first one when we were 1 nil up and was left forlorn in the second chance.

I asked around my group for the mental scars and the Macedonian debacle came top, following the spinning Dutch header in 1988, the late dodgy Belgium goal in the play off and of course Ray's miss against England. Dishonourable mentions also for throwing away the 1-3 lead in Poland and the penalty given away at home to Turkey in the play off. And there are lots more of course...
Forget about the performance or entertainment. It's only the result that matters.

Ray's probably tops it for me. Macedonia was a heartbreaker but I'd have preferred to have qualified (ahead of England) for Euro 92 than Euro 2000. The team was around its peak and winning at Wembley would have been incredibly satisfying.

I was a bit young for Kieft's header, still hurts in retrospect though.

3 goal in extra time, good result for forest but I doubt newcastle cared about the EPL?
