    Wexford FC v Waterford

A flat performance by Wexford, coupled with the concession of two soft goals, meant that the home side never really tested Waterford in Ferrycarrig this evening, and the 3-0 final score aptly reflected the gulf between the two teams. Wexford began with Cox, Douglas, Boyle, Robinson, McCann, Adeyemo, Dobbs, Hanratty, Dunne, C. Levingston and Webb. The game was delayed for 15 minutes due to crowd congestion. When it started, Wexford conceded a goal with the first shot on target, when Colm Cox in the Wexford goal attempted to catch a decent Waterford shot from Aouachria but could easily have parried it away, and the ball squirmed through his fingers. On eleven minutes, it was 2-0 when nobody in the Wexford defence tried to defend a routine cross into the Wexford area, and Aouachria had another tap-in for his second. It was hard to discern what Wexford’s strategy was at this stage and some semblance of shape seemed to appear when, five minutes before the break, Aaron Dobbs was moved more centrally up front. A good double save by Colm Cox kept the score at 2-0 at the break in favour of Waterford.

Wexford were marginally better in the second half but without forcing Martin in the Waterford goal to make even a half-decent save. On thirteen minutes, Aouachria got his best goal of the night when he turned Hugh Douglas and planted a shot low into the left-hand corner past Cox in the Wexford goal. Game meandered from then until the end with Waterford in control and Wexford struggling to create anything. Subs for Wexford were Danny Furlong, Sean Fitzpatrick, Darragh Levingston and James Crawford with Furlong and Fitzpatrick making a decent impact. Waterford were worthy winners but Wexford didn’t push them at all and the home side will know that they have to improve. Crowd was, I believe, stated to be 1,921.
