I don't believe that will be the case this year. I have a good feeling that the mighty Spurs will win a champions league place this year.

O another positive note NOC has departed the Lims
    Oh Joy joy happiness !!!

I think the delirium from NOC's apparant departure has gone to your head Pauli. Spurs finishing above Rafa Benitez's Liverpool, Utd or Arsenal? I don't think so. How about trying for the UEFA, or even better still, the intertoto cup first

Hang on - I think they only have to finish behind Chelsea, Man Utd and Arsenal. Don't Liverpool automatically qualify no matter where they finish?

No, Liverpool qualify by winning the actual competition outright, which is more than what Utd, Spurs and Arsenal put together won last season between them. Not only that, but we have also ensured that future winners qualify automatically by exposing UEFA's ridiculous and nonsensical rules. What do you think 'we' means? When you're a fan you refer to your club as we. Keep the pedantic and childish stuff off the Limerick forum please, it's bad enough on the rest of the site

Limerick were not in the CL this season. Because they didn't qualify according to the rules set out at the start of the season. Liverpool did not qualify by the rules set out at the start of the season. The rules were changed for Liverpool. I wonder if Real Madrid don't qualify next season will the rules be changed for them too. Its a slippery slope. By the way it isn't UEFA's nonsensical rule it is the FA's non-sensical rule. They appoint their national representatives.

Who do I supprt? Limerick FC.

Just 4 more years to go though, based on what our chairman said last year. Can't wait.....

Oh so you're one of the EL extremist snobs too, I suppose you refer to the premiership as the premiers**t as well, and use the'barstooler' phrase a lot? I support Limerick FC just like you, but I also support Liverpool and Ireland - all three are completely different and seperate streams.

(BTW, if you actually look at the situation properly you will see that it was UEFA's non-sensical rule/problem. The CL is their competition, therefore it is up to them to clearly state the rules regarding qualification without any room for ambiguity or interpretation. This was not the case, and that is why the rule has been changed. The rule wouldn't have been changed if there wasn't a problem with it in the first place. The fact is that the English FA had the balls to stand up to UEFA, whereas the Spanish FA didn't and just bowed to pressure from Real Madrid and the King of Spain, surprise surprise... Had the Spanish FA done what they should have done and refused to take the CL spot from Zaragoza (or R Sociedad, not sure)in the first place, this thing would have been ironed out long ago. Instead it was the FA and Liverpool that got the stupid rule changed, and as a Liverpool fan, that is something i'm proud of. There are very few people in the game that don't agree that the Champions should defend their trophy. The situation cannot now arise again, so you needn't worry about Real Madrid 'cos if they don't qualify, or win the competition, they won't be in it. Simple as that, see!)

Sorry about off-topic SLK, but I just can't let ridiculous statements like LFC In Exile's go

Well didn't already happen in La Liga?? Real finished 5th but won the Champions League so they qualified? Differance is is that the SFA had the bottle to kick out the 4th place team in favour of Real, which is what the English FA should have done to Everton, harse but fair!

I know this thread has gone completely off the point and SLK is being really generous keeping it open, but just a thought on the idea of the Champions League winners having a right to defend their title. The World Cup winners don't even enjoy this privilege. Brazil, who are the reigning World Champions, have to play to qualify for the next World Cup. They are not qualifying automatically on the basis of holders.

I agree that I'm being very generous and that generosity is just about gone to be honest. To continue with the tangents though the 2006 world cup is the first where the holders aren't afforded the right to defend their title automatically. In 1934 Uruguay refused to if I remember correctly but the option was there.
The ball is round and has many surprises.

The reason that is Kerry Blue is because the World Cup or European Championships are held every 4 years. Thus it makes no sense to allow a team to qualify automatically for a tournament that is 4 years down the road. You're talking about the possibility of a completely different team, set of players and manager benefitting from another groups achievements 4 years previously. There is no real continuity in tournamnents that are 4 years apart.

On the other hand the Champions League is held every season, so I can't see why it doesn't make sense for the defending champions to defend their title the following year. It's just common sense.

Well, they are really two years apart but the fials are 4 years apart. All that silly qualifying and stuff. So Brazil started defending their World Cup two years after they won it.

The winners should defend it. I have no problem changing the rule. But it is wrong to change it in retrospect. When a team starts out in a season they know what they have to achieve to get certain rewards. Everyone knew 4th place in premiership got you CL. Even when Liverpool were in the semi they were told finish 4th or no CL next season. So an obvious problem emerges - but you change it for next season on - not in retrospect. What would have happened if halfway through a season the FA or FAI decide to change the rules so that the second place team don't get CL. There would rigtly be uproar. This is the same argument. And Slavia Prague had to lose their seeding in the third qualifying round because of it - not fair.

And it is unfair to criticise UEFA - how were they to predict that a team as woeful as Liverpool, who would win less than half their games and finish level on points with Bolton, would somehow scrape through to steal the CL.

Oh and earlier on I was asked "what club that are considerably less successful than Liverpool do you support then?". The answer is obviously Limerick FC - because my English team is Man United and they don't fit the description in the question.
