    Malmo in the CL

Just noticed on uefa.com that they knocked out Macabi Hifa out in the 2nd round 5-4 overall. Im right in saying that Macabi got a result of Man U in the group stages last year amn't I? Probably reflects well on the level of Irish footie at the mo.

Didn't they beat United 3-0 at home when United had qualified and sent out the reserves? Think they lost 5-1 in Old Trafford or something?

Pointless comparisons if you ask me Troy. Malmo's last year's team were beaten by City's team last season in the Inter Toto and we mark the strength of Irish football on their progress? There's a far easier mark and that's the progress of our own teams in Europe, that is what the state of Irish football reflects on.

Didnt think that it was quite a reserve team, but not sure.

Pablo, I was only there because I wanted to get some (much needed) drum practice in

Jazy, that was back in 2002! United won 5-2 at home and lost 3-0 away. Trying to find the line-up...

Line up from Man Utd website -

UNITED: Ricardo; G Neville, Ferdinand, O'Shea, Silvestre; Forlan (Timm), P Neville, Scholes, Richardson (Nardiello, 62); Scholes; Solskjaer. Subs not used: Carroll, May, Pugh, Roche, Lynch.

Not as weak as I'd thought. Still, they won their other five games, so weren't too worried about this. They recovered to win their last group game as well.

Watched the Malmö match on the tele. Amazing match. Haifa scored early and looked in total control until their goalie dropped a high ball (absolute howler) and Malmö scored. Haifa scored again early in the second half but the goalscorer got a yellow card for his celebration antics. Haifa seemed in total control and it was more a question of how many they would score rather than whether Malmö would come back into the match. Anyway Haifa all over Malmö now and then their goalscorer jumps up, handles the ball for no apparent reason - a real Maradona effort - and gets himself sent off. All Malmö for the last twenty minutes of the match resulting in them scoring from a header in the 89th minute. Brillant!

Spot on. Stop making these stupid comparisons. "We beat Malmo last year so we'll beat Djurgardens" and "City are better than Liverpool coz they beat the team ahead of them in the league" are other examples. There comparisons are pointless. Let's go back to the good old days of seeing how far we can get in the cup, rather than this "better than someone else" or "coefficient points" attitudes.

Also, while I love the run we went on last year, it has to be noted that the Intertoto is being abandoned because teams aren't taking it serious. If we got malmo in the CL next year, I would fear them.

And no, i'm not a negative person, check the sig

Thats why I didnt make them I said it reflects well on irish football in general.

In the days when we were getting thumped every time we left the country its fair to say that the standard here was $hite, now though, only Longford remain an embarrasment. I cant see us going to Sweden this time and getting floggegd 3-0 like in 1998.
