    Greatest Song ever

What in your opinion is the greatest song ever, not your favorite song ever just what you think may be the greatest song ever. You don't evenv have to like the song.I'm sure this thread has been done before but not while i've been around so i'm bringing it back up.

No if,ands or buts,Or honourable mentions or 3/4 song titles Just 1 song and the name of the artist/s who sang it.

It's harder than people think to single out 1 song.

My favourite song is Burger Queen Francais by Placebo.

Best song ?? More difficult to say, it's a matter of personal opinion really so it doesn't feel nice to mention just one. Let's say I nominate these songs per genre:

    POP: No milk today-Herman's Hermits
    ROCK: Paint it black-Rolling Stones
    ALTERNATIVE ROCK/INDIE: Pure morning-Placebo
    HARDROCK: Ace of spades-Motorhead
    METAL: Sabbath bloody sabbath-Black Sabbath
    HIPHOP: Rapper's delight-Sugarhill gang
    GOTHIC: Bela Lugosi's dead-Bauhaus
    NEW-WAVE/DARK-WAVE: Crocodiles-Echo & The Bunnymen
    PUNK: New rose-The Damned
    INDUSTRIAL: Closer-Nine Inch Nails
SINGER-SONGWRITER: Walk this world-Heather Nova // Song of Joy-Nick Cave
    AVANT-GARDE: Theme for thought-Virgin Prunes
    GRUNGE: Lithium-Nirvana

Those are the ones for which I have an ideal example in my head. I let out styles that I dislike or have no interest in.

If I'd pick just one song it would be like putting one genre above the others in importance, which doesn't feel right to me. Even though we all know that gothic is the best style

Having heard it again on Live 8
I would have to plump for Pink Floyd's Comfortably Numb from The Wall.
I really like it even if it is not my favourite song of all time, but it is an excellently constructed song.

Not my personal favourite, but for universal appeal, and pure singability, Hey Jude, by the Beatles. Tomorrow I'll probably pick something different. That's the great thing about Music. My personal favourite, if forced to choose, is probably "Town Cryer" by Elvis Costello. It's got a great tune, superb lyrics, a great emotional vocal delivery and an absolutely belting string section at the end. A beautiful and sadly neglected classic, anybody else heard it ?

Has to be the live version of Maggot Brain on the One Nation Under A Groove special edition by Funkadelic. It's just an eight minute long guitar solo.

    Excellent choice ! Brilliant song...

"Hey Jude" ?? Overrated, just like The Beatles themselves.
