I just got back from holidays where I bought 22 or so CD's for in and around €100. All of these were bought in shops, not stalls where you could haggle about the price a bit. We really are getting robbed blind here.

Back in around 97 or 98 I was sussing out a Folk album by The Rankin Family - no joy anywhere here - not even as a pre-ordered import.
Found out a Canadian site who had it called Back Porch Records.
After converting to Canadian dollars, bank charge, paying airmail costs, my post and everything else - the entire cost came to well under 12 punts. The actual CD was about 5 punts. All the above costs were cheaper than what would have been the retail price over here and that's a chart album price not an import price which would have been even more even if a shop could have got it for me.
It was a just released album too - not a cheapo oldie.
I posted it on a Friday - Back Porch had no internet facility then or paypal etc- and had it delivered to me the following Friday, Can't figure out how I got it so quickly.
The prices of CDs are a scandal.
I bought 7 or 8 In New Zealand which were roughly half the price you would pay here (a little under a tenner each). The rest were bought in China where each CD came to about €1.50 or €2. I found out afterwards that the reason they are so cheap in China is that they don't pay the bands anything. The Chinese government employs companies to make exact copies both in the packaging and the CD itself and so are able to sell them at greatly reduced prices in their shops. The only problem was that the selection was not great. Probably as well really otherwise I would have been coming home with a couple of suitcases full of CDs.Originally Posted by superfrank

Bye bye Stan. Go off back to collecting cones you useless git.
you cant compare bootleg chineese cd's to what we get in the shops here , but we do pay too much if you look at www.cdwow.ie you can normally pick up new cd's for 12 euro free postage aswell .
i only buy in hmv if a really have to have it that day
Well the cd's there are packaged in the exact same way as the originals, the graphics are the exact same as the originals and the sound quality on each is the exact same as the originals so all in all they are good enough for me!Originally Posted by anto1208
You can only compare legit CD prices so comparing cdwow versus HMV in Dublin is valid. €12 versus €18?Originally Posted by anto1208
Amazon.co.uk will have most new releases at €12-13 & they include 17% VAT which won't explain 30-50% differen on the street here.
Someone told me that Thailand has no copyright laws which is why can buy stuff on the street there. Possibly the same in China.
I think price of DVDs are bigger rip off in retailers here.
I'm comparing 2 different prices for what is essentially the same product. They look and sound the same as each other so that is good enough for me. I accept that one is legitmate and the other is a bootleg, even if it is a very high quality bootleg, but when there is no real tangible difference between the two it's really irrelevant which product you buy as the quality is the same in both cases.
I prefer Amazon myself. Very reliable.Originally Posted by Aldini98

Play.com cant beat them! I find them normally the cheapest for CD's & DVD's and free delivery. Plus if you pre-order anything from them they don't charge your credit card until the item is ready for dispatch.
