Staunton?
Who was the youngest player to be given his first cap by Charlton?
Staunton?

Probably! I've actually no idea. Wasn't Stan called up for the Euro88 squad without ever having played for Liverpool?
I was thinking maybe Roy Keane but Stan would have been a lot younger.
Gary Kelly maybe?
Looking around google it looks like Keane was younger. Debuted about 3 months shy of 20 whereas Stan was about the same on the older side.

Just had a quick check on Gary Kelly. He was born on 09/07/74 so he was 19 when he was first capped. As far as I remember he got his first cap 2 or 3 months before USA '94 so it looks like it's a toss up between himself and Stan.

Good call. Do you think Gary Kelly ever fulfilled his early promise? I remember being really excited when he had Ryan Giggs in his pocket at Old Trafford, very early in his career. He had such pace (not like his nephew!) but I thought he was pretty ordinary in the end. In hindsight, I'd have preferred to see him at RB than O'Shea against Israel though.
I don't think he really delivered on his promise to be honest. I remember a friendly versus holland just before the WC in 1994 and he had a great game against Overmars but his performances waned a bit as time went by, and I'm not just talking about towards the end of his intl. career. The defensive side of his game was generally pretty decent but I always thought that with his pace he could do a bit more in attack. Also his passing was not that great. As strange as it sounds he was one of those footballers that was better when he did not have the ball, a bit like Terry Phelan. It was always great to see Terry going flying up the wing outside Staunton before Stan would release the ball to him. The only problem was that when Terry got the ball he hadn't a clue what to do with it.
Yeah Kelly Scored against Germany in a friendly alright. His shot took a deflection off a defenders leg and looped over the goalies head. Strangely enough his only other intl. goal (V. Cyprus) was nearly the exact same. As for Dennis, I'm not sure about that one but as far as I remember he got capped in one of our first games after Italia 90.Originally Posted by tetsujin1979
Irwin got capped against (I think) Morocco in 1990. 24 years old, I think.
I think Irwin was a late bloomer. The first time I saw him was in an U23 International against Norn Iron at Dalyer. He was still at Oldham at the time. He scored a beauty in a 3-0 win.
If only we still had those kind of games!
Niall Quinn was 19 in 1986 when he was capped by Charlton against Iceland.
I think the answer to this might be a player that not many people remember. He was Mark Kelly who played for Portsmouth and who made his debut against Yugoslavia in Dublin in April 1988. He played 4 times in total, his last cap being against Morocco in 1990. When he got his first cap he was 18 and 156 days.Originally Posted by Stuttgart88
The next youngest capped by Charlton I believe was Mark Kennedy, who was 19 and 128 days when he made his debut against Austria in Vienna in September 1995.
Niall Quinn (19/236 days), Gary Kelly (19/262 days), Steve Staunton (19/278 days) and Roy Keane (19/290 days) were next.
I cannot think of anyone else who was 18 or 19 who was capped by Charlton.
Honest! I am not a secret Tim nor a closet Sham - I really am a Seagull.
Just have, Pat Scully got his one and only cap against Tunisia in Dublin in October 1988. He was 18 and 123 days.Originally Posted by Superhoops
