    WYW v DLR Waves

Comfortable win in the end for Wexford as three second-half goals secured the three points for the home side. Wexford started with the lively Jess Lawler up front and began with Maeve, Della, Nicola, Lolly, Edel, Aoibheann, Rossi, Becky, Kylie, Ellen and Jess. Unlike the previous cup-tie between the same two teams, it was Wexford who dominated the first half and eventually created a number of chances. DLR were without the former Wexford defender, Jess Gleeson, who was injured. Wexford held onto the ball early on although perhaps moved it a little too laterally on occasions and the only real effort on goal by Wexford in the first twenty minutes or so was a lob by Kylie Murphy which was held by Eve Badana in the Waves goal. The first Wexford goal, when it came, was on 23 minutes largely due to the magic of Ellen Molloy who collected the ball on the right wing, drifted inside two DLR defenders and drilled a low shot into the corner of the DLR net to give Badana no chance and it was 1-0. Nicola Sinnott then headed over the bar from a Wexford corner and Kylie Murphy had a far post chance to increase Wexford’s lead. Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal was called into action for the first time on the half-hour mark when some sloppiness at the back by Wexford gifted DLR a shot on goal but Williams was able to gather cleanly. Kylie Murphy then converted a cross by Becky Watkins but the goal was ruled out for offside. A good catch by Badana from an Ellen Molloy free completed the half and Wexford were deservedly in front at half-time by a single goal to nil.

It was DLR who upped the gears at the beginning of the second period as Wexford took a long time to get going. DLR won two successive corners early on and then, on eight minutes, Sarah McKevitt equalised for DLR with a class goal for the away side as she rifled home from thirty yards to give Williams no chance. As is often the case, it is whether Rossi is dominating down her wing which determines Wexford’s ability to turn games in their favour, and Ciara Rossiter, after shooting straight at Badana on twenty minutes, produced another mazy run which brought her past two DLR defenders and a neat finish past Badana on 25 minutes to restore Wexford’s lead. On 32 minutes, it was 3-1 to Wexford when the excellent Della Doherty surged down the right wing for Wexford and her cross to the near post found Kylie Murphy who knocked it past Badana for Wexford’s third goal. DLR’s chance to turn the tide back in their favour seemed to disappear when their most creative player, McKevitt, was taken off and replaced. Wexford brought on a number of subs as the half progressed including Freya DeMange, Aine Walsh, Michaela Lawrence and Emma Walker. It was 4-1 with five minutes to go as Ciara Rossiter was able to stab home a ball which travelled a long way to reach DLR’s far post. So, 4-1 at full-time with Wexford comfortable enough after a rough patch at the start of the second half.
