"Knee damage too much" say club
Jamie Rooney's engage Super League season is over after a specialist recommended the Wakefield star have surgery on his injured knee.
The Wildcats' stand-off damaged his cruciate ligament in the 44-18 win over Widnes on July 17 and has now been told he will have to go under the knife to correct the problem.
The 25-year-old is likely to be sidelined for around six months, although the club are confident the player will be fit for the start of next season.
“This is obviously a big blow for Jamie who has had a superb season, but he is a strong character and he will get through the injury and be fit and fresh for the start of next season," stated coach Tony Smith on the club's website.
Rooney's absence for the rest of the campaign will be a blow for the club, particularly as they still harbour hopes of reaching the play-offs.
A run of three successive wins has pushed the Wildcats well clear of the relegation zone and they now sit just two points back of sixth-placed London.
Rooney's goalkicking skills will also be missed as he is currently the club's top-scorer with 178 points.
