    WYW v Peamount

Astonishing game in Ferrycarrig this evening as Wexford and Peamount played out a thrilling 3-3 draw. Wexford started with Maeve, Meabh, Nicola, Della, Lolly, Aoibheann, Freya DeM, Kylie, Becky, Ellen and Rossi. In good conditions, Wexford started the sharper and pressed hard from the beginning for the opening goal. On eight minutes, Kylie Murphy had a lob towards the Peas goal but it went straight to Niamh Reid Burke, the Peas goalkeeper. On 18 minutes, Erin McLoughlin got the opening goal for the Peas, slightly against the run of play, when she tucked home a rebound off Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal. However, within two minutes, Wexford drew level when the exceptional Ellen Molloy battled through the Peas defence to finish past Reid Burke. Wexford were still looking the better side during this half and Ellen Molloy got her second of the half when fed by Becky Watkins and Ellen finished with her right foot for 2-1 to Wexford. Wexford then were unable to clear their lines and Peas drew level again when Sadbh Doyle bent to finish a header to the Wexford net. 2-2 at this stage. However, Wexford went ahead again at 3-2 when Kylie Murphy finished a good move with a delightful chip to the corner of the net. 3-2 to Wexford at half-time and Wexford perhaps deservedly ahead.

If Wexford shaded the first half, it was the Peas who looked the more dangerous for a lot of the second half with Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal called into action on a number of occasions. With five minutes gone in the second half, Aine O’Gorman for the Peas was given too much room to turn and shoot and she finished well for 3-3. Maeve Williams then did well to touch a Peas effort over her own cross-bar for a corner. With nine minutes to go in the game, a Peas effort came off the outside of the Wexford post for a corner so some Wexford defender must have got a touch to it. Wexford then had three good shouts for penos of which the first looked really cast-iron for a shove in the back on Ellen Molloy but nothing was given. With a few minutes to go, Stephanie Roche got a straight red from an unpredictable referee for what was reported to be a “verbal issue.” Wexford tried hard to get the winner playing with the advantage in numbers but to no avail in the final few minutes. Wexford also benefitted from the return after a long lay-off of Edel Kennedy as a substitute with another long absentee, Lauren Dwyer, also featuring on the bench. Big plus for Wexford was that it represented by far their best performance of the season and, hopefully, the squad can continue to return to full strength. In addition to star Ellen Molloy, thought there were really good games from Freya De Mange and Meabh Russell. 3-3 at full-time.
