    WYW v DLR Waves

Third against fourth so a tight game was expected in Ferrycarrig this evening as Wexford faced DLR Waves. And, so it proved, as Wexford relied on a really good performance from the back five to pick up the three points. Wexford started with Maeve, Meabh, Della, Nicola, Lolly, Emma W, Kylie, Ellen, Freya DeM, Rossi and with Becky up front. First decent chance fell to DLR when a forward had a chance to lob Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal, but Maeve was able to get her hands to it and was then fouled. Wexford didn’t put much pressure on Eve Badana early on, but a free for Wexford on 13 minutes was put into the danger area, where a DLR defender turned it into her own net past Badana for 1-0 to Wexford. DLR applied a good deal of pressure after the concession of the goal, but the Wexford defence largely held firm. As the half neared its end, DLR had a shot a yard over the Wexford bar and Wexford's Emma Walker had a run in at an angle against Badana but the latter was able to save. 1-0 to Wexford at half-time.

With four minutes gone in the second half, Rossi had a good chance on her right foot for Wexford but couldn’t keep it on target. DLR again applied some pressure on the Wexford back four, but good defending, coupled with some athletic catches by Maeve Williams, kept the DLR forwards at bay. Jess Lawlor came on as a sub for Wexford and impressed and later Cliodhna Donnelly and Siun Murdiff. With two minutes to go in the game, a Ciara Rossiter free surprised a back-pedalling Eve Badana and Wexford were two goals ahead. 2-0 to Wexford at the end of the game and a very valuable three points. Best for Wexford were the back five of Maeve, Meabh, Nicola, Della and Lolly with Freya De Mange showing good passing ability in front of the back four and Becky Watkins looking more and more comfortable in the central role up front. For DLR, Jess Gleeson as usual cleaned up a lot of ball at the back for the Waves with Sarah McKevitt doing well down DLR’s right wing. 2-0 at full-time.
