Lapira definitely the worst to be capped for us in the modern era given that he never played at any professional level of note - the Norwegian second division was as far as he went.
Joe O'Cearuill may be our worst multi-cap international given that he won two. Only played a handful of games in League 1, 2 and the LoI in his club career.
But neither of those won a competitive cap. I'd maybe nominate Alan O'Brien as the poorest player to win a competitive cap, I think Staunton capped him in a few qualifiers, he was fast but otherwise hopeless.
Worst player to play for us in a finals tournament? Obviously the standard of player is higher here. Maybe Paul Green or Simon Cox?
Id say Paul Green yeah
Have a sneaky suspicion Georgie Kelly could become a really unlikely success story for Ireland in the coming year or two.
He's a big fella, good hold up play, a good finisher, and good option from set pieces. What he lacks is a burst of pace, but with Ireland style of play, won't exactly be required to burst at defences on the counter where the likes of Parrott, Obafemi and co will have that area covered.
https://kesslereffect.bandcamp.com/album/kepler - New music. It's not that bad.
He seems to be banging them in
The real deal will be when the season starts. If he scores routinely at championship level with a newly promoted team then we will know
He’s not quick by any stretch but he’s faster than he looks, he’s not a Conor Salmon or a Patrick Hoban or a James Collins
On the bench for the season opener against Swansea today, but apparently that's because he was ill during the week.
So the mystery of if he's actually any good or not will have to last another week.
Meanwhile, Ogbene gets the opener.
Won the Mattress Online Man of the Match award (with 75% of the 1,975 votes cast by the public) for his performance v Port Vale in Carabao Cup first round (www.themillers.co.uk).
I wonder was he given a mattress to take home like that time Conor Sammon got a pizza at Partick Thistle.
Used it to put some of his doubters to bed
Tallaght Stadium Regular
First Championship goal tonight.
First goal in six appearances, but all off the bench so it's not far off a goal every 90 minutes actually
Second of the season just now. That's three goals in 150 minutes for the club (counting the promotion-confirming one). With Parrott out injured, Kelly may well be worth a look in the November friendlies.
much better options out there than gkelly. god only knows with kenny though given he gave scales a call up last time.
Much better?
Parrott took about 25 games to get off the mark in the second tier. Maguire has scored 12 goals in the last 4 and a bit seasons. Adam Idah is injured and barely knows where the goal is anyway. James Collins has struggled at international level and has now dropped down to the third tier. Hamilton is coming on for 5-10 minutes in games which isn't ideal. Hogan and Keane are doing well (5 apiece so far this season) but also haven't reproduced that at international level, though they're the kind of players I'd like to see given an option in November. Ogbene and Obafemi we know about at this stage, though you'd expect one or other to be involved too, which is fine.
You can say Kelly's limited for sure, but I think our problems up front are so fundamental that we can't really ignore someone with three goals in 150 minutes for his club.
will keane is a lot better thats for sure and can fulfil more roles up top than kelly. parrott and kelly arent really similar so not much a comparison there. kelly is far too limited to international level football in my view. we'll be in desperate shape if hes ever considered to be a viable option.
