    WYW v Sligo

Very competent display by Wexford tonight who were pushed all the way by an impressive Sligo squad paying their first ever visit to Ferrycarrig Park. Wexford started with Maeve, Della, Nicola, Lolly, Meabh, Aoibheann, Ellen, Teegan, Becky, Kylie and Rossi. Playing with the aid of a decent breeze, Wexford started like a train and peppered the Sligo goal early on with Sample in the Sligo goal doing well to keep a few efforts out. Wexford's Della Doherty had the first shot on the Sligo goal but it went wide and then Sample had to palm away two efforts on goal by Becky Watkins and Kylie Murphy leading to two Wexford corners. On 17 minutes, Sample did well again to dive at the feet of Ciara Rossiter close in to the Sligo goal. The pitch in Ferrycarrig is not easy at present and Wexford lost their way a bit after that as Sligo came more into the game. A difficult high volley which couldn’t be kept on target proved to be Sligo’s only decent effort in the first half. Just as Wexford looked like going into the break on even terms, Becky Watkins produced the bit of magic required when she drifted in from the right wing and slotted the ball home with her left on 37 minutes to put Wexford ahead. Ellen Molloy then tested Sample again in the Sligo goal but it was saved. 1-0 to Wexford at half-time.

Playing against the breeze in the second half, the ball held up better for Wexford and the football from the home side improved accordingly. The testing breeze made it difficult for defenders on both sides but Nicola Sinnott and Della Doherty were impeccable in the middle of the back four for Wexford. As Wexford pressed for the second goal to make the game safe, it eventually came with about eleven minutes to go when the ball broke to Kylie Murphy and when her shot was saved by Sample, the rebound fell to Ciara Rossiter who finished from a tight angle. Subs for Wexford at this stage included Siun, Jess, Freya R and Freya DeM. So, 2-0 to Wexford at the end with Nicola Sinnott and Della Doherty impressing at the back for Wexford and Kylie Murphy and particularly Becky Watkins doing well up front. Very decent show from Sligo who can only get better and are already more than meeting up to the physical demands of the WNL. 2-0 to Wexford at full-time.
