I see costello is on bench tonight for first time. Interesting one don't think he has really been involved underage much for us. Just too old forv19s this year and wasn't picked in the 20s training camp. Has seemed to be well amongst the goals at 23s. I think I read somewhere that Stephen ireland does individual coaching with him, supposed to be very pacy
Good to see a Limerick lad possibly make his debut, not many involved at senior level in the UK or even LOI PD. Caretaker manager is the U23s manager so a good chance he might see some minutes if he remains in charge for the rest of the season.
Shockingly, Costelloe starts for Burnley tonight in the Championship opener.
That kind of came completely out of the blue, no?
A nice start to the season!
He played towards the end of last season so I dont think its completely out of the blue
Was going to ask was there a thread on this guy, never heard of him.. only 19 and starting.. and playing well (apart from a shocking miss just before half time)
Is he even close to the 21s?
He looks like a big young lad too.. serious unit
Crawford has spoken about him in terms of the next campaign but he could definitely be an option for the Israel playoff games - looks further on in his development than Tyreik Wright going by tonight's game.
He’s fast! Only watched the second half but looks decent too.
Cullen already has been a class act.
got 73 mins and played well.. be interesting to see if he gets a run of games..
Cullen definitely looks like Burnleys linchpin.. playing very well
Yeah that and the combination of them losing McNeill this week and Cornet going in a few days - they're missing their 2 best wingers, so thought he was likely to play. Hopefully he does well enough to keep a place in the medium term.
We should have some decent wingers in the next campaign: Ebosele, Costelloe, Springett, Hill, Burns, Okoflex (not sure if Sotona will reach the levels) and that's just the 2002 kids.
2003 has guys like Ollie O'Neill, Andy Moran, Lee Harkin, John Joe Patrick Finn, Calum Kavanagh, Jonny Kenny, Aido Emakhu and Cian Hayes
Josh Cullen, man of the match.. could be a huge season for him this season
Good to see Josh challenge himself by playing in the ultra-competitive Championship. It should hopefully improve him as a player.
The Belgian top flight, whilst fine as a development league for younger talent, is pretty poor, and rather variable in quality.
This was actually his debut, he hasn't played for Burnley before. He was on the bench towards the end of the season when Burnley went through an injury crisis, but hadn't made a single league appearance before today.
He hadn't even been assigned a squad number so most Burnley supporters were very surprised. I thought he did well and hopefully he can kick on and stay in the team, although I think that is unlikely.
Josh Cullen absolutely bossed the game and made three or four great passes that had the crowd on their feet.

Certainly made a good first impression with the fans. Great to have another option up front if Connolly doesn’t regain his early promise:

Well that was a pleasant surprise - I knew he had been scoring regularly for their U23s and had been in a couple of first-team squads and was hopeful he would get a shot some time this season (or at least a loan) but I really didn't think he would be starting on the opening day, particularly with a brand new manager - looked comfortable at this level - let's hope he can keep his place and maybe grab a goal sooner rather than later.
McNeil moving on created the opportunity. I only watched the extended highlights, did ok in some parts, looked v raw in others. A mixed bag. I would be surprised to see him start consistent games for burnley this side of Christmas. VK will surely delve into the transfer market. Needs a good season of senior football to see where he lands (on loan before window shuts if burnley strengthen in his position), wouldn’t be overly excited yet
Another start for Costelloe. Has to be considered a great sign of faith by VK in his ability. Even if Burnley strengthen before the window slams shut!
They've signed another winger today as well as bringing Nathan Tella in during the week. Even if he eventually drops out he should still see some minutes with teams now allowed five subs. Was performing at CF for the U23s so that's also a possibility for him with Ashley Barnes and Jay Rodriguez as the only CFs there.
Fair play to the lad.. he's getting regular games at a higher level than a lot of the senior squad..
Reckon he might get a late call for the 21s?
He's definitely have to be considered for the finals if he stayed a full season in the Burnley team
He was substituted at half time. Not watching so not clear why but he is getting absolutely roasted in the twitterverse.
