Best attacking performance of the season thus far as Wexford created loads of chances in Ferrycarrig this evening, but they gave up lots of chances too to keep the excitement going right to the end. Wexford started with Alex, Frieler, Paul, Joe, Conor C, Conor B, Jack, Aaron, Adam, Harry and Lorcan. The goals started right from the beginning of the game. On two minutes, Cobh coughed up possession just outside their area, and the irrepressible Jack Doherty smacked it home for 1-0. Wexford then conceded an identical goal when they lost possession outside their own area two minutes later, and Cobh’s Desmond shot home for 1-1. Wexford pressed for a second goal but then, on nine minutes, Cobh shouted hard for a last man foul by Wexford, but nothing was given. Jack Doherty then almost got through on the Cobh goal again and followed this up by running through again before laying it off unselfishly for Conor Barry to tap it into the empty net for 2-1 to Wexford. At this stage, Aaron Dobbs and Jack Doherty were causing the Cobh defence all sorts of problems and Harry Groome had a shot which trickled wide of the Cobh post before Cobh fashioned a rare chance just before the end of the half but, from an angle, it never was kept on target. 2-1 to Wexford at half-time and a well-deserved lead for the home side.
Wexford won a corner immediately at the start of the second half and the corner taken by Jack was flicked to the far post by a Cobh defender where Aidan Friel was able to bundle it home for 3-1. Harry Groome nearly made it 4-1 but his final shot was blocked, and Cobh then got back into the game as they passed the ball through the Wexford defence for Drinan to slot home for 3-2. With almost the hour gone, Aaron Dobbs forced the ball into the Cobh net from inches after another brilliant cross by Doherty and it was 4-2. Looked safe for Wexford at this stage but Wexford don’t tend to sit back to defend leads and twice Wexford defenders had to make last-ditch headers off the goal-line to prevent Cobh from adding a third goal. Subs for Wexford as the half progressed included Jordon, Dinny, Conor Davis, Evan and Kevin. Alex Moody then stretched to push away a Cobh header and, right on the 90 minutes, another Cobh header brushed the top of the Wexford crossbar and went over.
4-2 at the end after a scintillating attacking effort by Wexford led by Dobbs and Doherty, with Jack’s touch and ability being at a remarkable level. Maybe 350 at the game.
