I have to disagree there Pete, I now O' Grady works hard in games but I think that it would be a bad reflection on the league if a player of his limited capabilities makes a representative team.

A less than inspiational midfield is one of the main reasons for City's poor results this year. O' Grady is not a patch of former City midfielders like Barry or Feyne in my opinion. [/B]
But O'Grady isnt supposed to be a creative player like Barry or Frayne. Who is better Roy Keane or Paul Scoles? If Keane, why? He wont split the defence with one pass. If Scoles, why? He wont make the tackle to win the ball back in midfield. O'Grady isnt in the same class as Frayne, but Frayne also isnt in the same class as O'Grady!

Spot on- O'Grady is effective, not creative and he is the best player we have when it comes to fulfilling his role in the team.

He may be the best defensive midfielder that Cork City have but that does not mean that he is the best ( opr even one of the best ) defensive midfielder(s) in the League!

Shut up Shelsman, youre really starting to annoy me. You are just jealous of city because we have bout 10 times more fans than you! O'Grady is a very good player, probabley our best this season along with Ollie.

I have to say that Gannon(?) & Hunt are probably better, but I know that Hunt is English so he cant play (Im not too sure about Gannon).

Gannon is past it, thats why he went to shels! he was released by stockport, possibly the worst performing team in England this season.

I never suggested O'Grady was even one of the best midfielders in the league but was commenting on his omission from the eL squad.

Hunt is ENGLISH i.e. NOT IRISH so cannot be selected for the squad just like other players such as Fenlon, Rutherford, Morrision, Russell, etc... etc....

O'Grady despite apparently being an attacking forward at Sligo is clearly a defensive midfielder in the Roy Keane always gives 100% mould.

The only reason i could see for O'Grady not being in the squad would be he wanted a rest or off on holidays.

If O'Grady was playing for a good team if would be clear how good he really been this season.

    (1) If he's not one of the best midfielders in the League then he shouldn't be in the squad so why crib about his omission!

    (2) Seeing as he was an attacking ( and goal scoring ) midfielder for Sligo, why have City made him into a defensive one when they already have so many unspectacular players!

    (3) My point exactly.

City's fans are a credit to the League ( bar one or two morons in the shed ). Yes, they have more fans that Shels.

The fact that O'Grady was the only decent player other than Cahill shows what a poor squad City had this season. Morley and especially Caulfield are past it. They were great players in their day especially Morley but City have failed to replace them.
All they had to do was find a good partner for Mulligan and ..... a decent team to create chances for them too!
Obviously the board weren't prepared to splash out on a few signings -which is fair enough if the money isn't there. Sooner City have a poor season rather than go to the wall again.

City have two good keepers and a good defence but as ye've been saying the creativity just isn't there ( and will be non-existent once Cahill leaves ).

If it's a defensive midfielder you want then Caffrey is solid enough ( already in the squad -why have such a big one in the first place? ). For an all-rounder I'd go for Stephen Murphy. Gannon would be fine too. If you wanted to have an U21 or U23 squad then you could bring in O'Grady.

This is the last time i'm saying this. Many of the best midfielders in the league are not from the Republic!!!! NI i think are entering their own team so maybe fenlon, hutton etc... will be in that squad? Of the midfielders left in the league after you exclude any of those not born in the republic Conor O'Grady is worthy of a place in the squad.

Saying all this i'm making the assumption the manager saw to spread the players selected around as many teams as he could + some probably keen to have a break or go on holidays. Also i think citys poor season has lead to caffrey, osam & russell getting the node ahead of him.

BTW i thought russell either english or from the north?

p.s. shels have about 2 seasons left in their current format. Once the other dublin clubs (particularily rovers) get their act together & draw more sponsorship & fans shels will cease to be able to entice the better players as their wages won't be high enough. Merger with dub city might save youse though

    Angry

According to that story the eL semi-pro selection will be playing (minus the bohs players off to spanish tournament) the following selections.
    - league of wales.
    - scottish 3rd divison
    - english conference

Does this mean fulltime pro players aren't supposed to play?

IMO its an insult to the league playing those scottish & welsh selections. english conference is bad enough but doubt there much difference between that & the english 3rd division.

Agree but if we pi$$ on them, it might open the eyes of some people to the quality of the league.

Ya but if we loose the negative press will be terrible.

I think that we would be far better off playing the Ireland u-21 or an 'A' team. Pleeeeeaaaaasssseeeee no-one make an "A-Team" joke, (coz I'd pitty the fool who would.) (D'oh!)

What the League should really do is have the Eircom First Division XI play these spanners and have the Premier Division XI play against selections from the English and Scottish 2nd Divisions ( at worst ) OK, include the Welsh and N Irish too if needs be.

The Eircom League Premier Division XI should play against some of the following:

    Finnish League XI
    Slovenian League XI
    Hungarian League XI
    Slovakian League XI

i.e teams from countries that are reasonably respectable internationally but not so strong on the European Club Level.

Maybe the representational games should be done away with because the Big Leagues ( Italy, Germany, England, Spain ) will never play us as they are successfull in European Club Football and so don't need to play representational games ( not to mention the fact of taking multi-million pound players off their clubs and risking them in meaningless games ).

Just naming the Premier Division XI should be enough -its only our inferiority complex about the league that forces us to seek out these games to 'prove how good we are'.

The best thing that has come of any of these representational games was when an Eircom League U21 selection played the Senior International Team. In this way both Mick McCarthy and, more importantly, Don Givens were able to see the best young talent playing in the country.

Great to see Stuart Byrne & Paul McNally been picked. Stephen O'Brien (Longford Town) probably would have been picked aswell, only for he is just gone on his holidays. Digger (as LTFC fans know him as) is one of the best keepers in eL. Only for him Town would have gone down, this season.

At least Digger was picked last season for the eL team.

Except for the forwards a fairly sad looking squad in general at the end.

Can't blame players for pulling out of this mickey mouse competition anyway given we only 10 weeks away from start of new season already.
