That goal takes the gloss off it for Rhyl, it could prove very costly.

That goal could well cost Rhyl in the end, very unfortunate.

I'm a proud man tonight!! Bit snapping at Longford winning - actually I'm not really which makes me wonder!!

GREAT to see ALL the Irish teams do well in Europe and I think it's the best round of European results since I've got online and harassed all y'all!!

Next thing you know people will have to invent another reason to avoid EL games than "I'd never watch that ****e!"
I'd rather die laughing than trying!

Is this the first year in a while that Irish sides have been seeded?
All three good results may be a reflection of it!
Well done to Cork, Longford and Shels.

I may be blind but the Independent online doesn't carry the Longford match report? Can someone else have a look? If not, thats incredible!!! I would of expected a piece on the success of all three teams?

Checked the actual paper and its in it. Must not see it online!! We got a 1/6 of a page on the two games

garry doyle reckons it's 43 years since we've had 3 european wins in a week and three sides have never got through a round.
Reporter: "Gordan, can we have a quick word?"

Slight correction, but at this stage, it's true enough.

No - sure they've been seeded in the CL ever since Shels beat Jugomagnat. Bohs and Longford were seeded in the UEFA last year. And Cork aren't even seeded this year!

    From d'Indo:

    'Town record first Euro win

    LONGFORD T 2

    CARMARTHEN 0

    Owen Cowzer

LONGFORD completed an unprecedented hat-trick of victories for Irish clubs in European competition with victory in last night's UEFA Cup first round first leg at Flancare Park.

Stephen Paisley and Barry Ferguson grabbed the goals to give Town a deserved victory - their first in European competition - after they outclassed their out-of-season Welsh opponents.

After a shaky start during which Stephen O'Brien was forced to save from Mark Dodds and Ferguson blocked an effort from Daniel Thomas, the home side lifted the tempo and ran their opponents ragged as John Martin, Dean Fitzgerald and Davy Byrne had shots deflected wide.

The Longford breakthrough arrived in the 35th minute after Alan Murphy fed Fitzgerald whose chipped cross to the left hand side of the area was met by a cool right foot volley from Paisley that rocketed into the corner of the net.

Longford scored their second ten minutes after the break when Ferguson powered home a close range header from Alan Kirby's accurate corner.

If Longford felt the tie was over, they got an injury-time warning when Dodds headed over.

LONGFORD TOWN - O'Brien; Murphy, Dillon, Ferguson, Paisley; Kirby, Fitzgerald (Prunty 77), Martin, Byrne; Myler, Keegan.

    REF - P Olsiak (Slovakia).

Around 2,500 I'd say.A little smaller than was hoped for but beats our regular crowd I guess. 100 or so Welsh were expected dont really know how many there was as they were in with our fans and they didn't have much to shout about.
Upwards to the vanguard where the pressure is too high.
