Wexford finished their season in style as, playing some really good football at times, they collected a deserved three points against Bray in Ferrycarrig tonight. Even though they’ve finished bottom, there’s a fair bit of optimism about Ferrycarrig for next season due to the turnaround in the second half of the season and with manager, Ian Ryan, already secured for next year. Wexford started with Jimmy, Cian, Paul, Conor, Karl F, Jack M, Jack D, Kyle, Dobbo, Harry and Lorcan. The game didn’t start well for Wexford as, in the fourth minute, Bray scored with their first effort on goal as Brandon Kavanagh found too much space outside the Wexford area and found the corner of Wexford’s net. Wexford reacted by playing some of their best football of the season as they attacked repeatedly from midfield with Conor Crowley, Harry Groome and Jack Moylan prominent and only some stout Bray defence and good keeping from Maher in the Bray goal kept Wexford at bay. Kyle Robinson for Wexford probably went closest during this spell as he hit the inside of the post but the ball stayed out and then Maher pushed another of his efforts on goal around the post for a Wexford corner. Wexford then deservedly drew level when Daniel Dobbin hit a shot on target and, although the goal was credited to him, it seemed to take a decent deflection off Jack Doherty on the way in to give Maher no chance. 1-1 about midway through the half. Catastrophe for the home side straight from the kick-off, however, as Jimmy Corcoran and a Wexford defender both hesitated to clear the ball inside the Wexford area, and Brandon Kavanagh was able to nip in to roll the ball into the empty net to make it 2-1 for Bray. Wexford pushed again for a second equalizer with Jack Doherty steering a shot wide when put through on goal and the excellent Jack Moylan beating three Bray defenders but then being unable to finish. Late in the half, Bray fashioned two chances of their own with Jimmy Corcoran parrying a decent shot and then dealing well with a good header from Gary Shaw. 2-1 to Bray at half-time.
Wexford brought on Thomas Considine and Evan Farrell at half-time while Bray replaced their keeper with Maher unable to continue. Jack Doherty had a header on target for Wexford which was saved by Bray’s sub keeper, before the sub looked to have a routine cross in his hands but then dropped it behind the goal-line to give Wexford the opportunity to level it again at 2-2. An Evan Farrell header for his first senior goal for Wexford made it 3-2 and then Bray were reduced to 10 men due to a straight red for a studs-up tackle. Jack Moylan then produced another mazy run through the Bray defence before finishing to make it 4-2 for Wexford. Late Wexford subs were Luke Scanlon and Ayman Yousif. 4-2 at full-time with a really good crowd for us of about 450 due to U18 free entry and other promotions.
