    Glens v Shels on RTE

Don't know if this is old news but this is an e-mail someone got on boards.ie:

    Brian,
I am in receipt of your email re above. Yes, I can confirm that RTE will be transmitting this match on Wednesday 13th July on RTE 2 at 7.00 pm. This is the only Champions League match being transmitted that evening.
    Kind regards.
Bernie Fitzpatrick - RTE Information Officer.

TV3 will show the Liverpool game.

And probably advertise it on EL Weekly again. And hopefully will be destroyed in the ratings again.

Programme starting at 7 is odd though kick off is 7, is it starting right with kick off? Usually if they don't want much of a build up they'll at least start at 6:55

And it should kill the pool game in the ratings. If the two are on the same night I know which one I'll be watching

They're both on at the same night yeah, I'd imagine it'll beat the Liverpool game by a higher margin than Shels Depor beat Man Us game on the same night.

However with kick off at 7 and the pool match at 7:45 afaik, you can watch at least a half of both.

With Pool playing a near irrelevant match against minnow opposition and Shels playing as tasty a game as they could have drawn I'd hope RTÉ will win the ratings war.

It'll be a cracker of a game, and even though I'm a Liverpool fan the Shels game will be the one to watch! I'd say it'll definately win out in the ratings.
The fight is won or lost far away from witnesses - behind the lines, in the gym, and out there on the road, long before I dance under those lights.

I don't think even diehard Liverpool fans will have any interest in TNS at home. Tie will be over at halftime.

I'd say this is going to be the miss match of the season. It won't surprize me if Liverpool win this game 10-0. The League of Wales is very poor. I think Longford should beat Carmathen Town in the Uefa Cup. I just hope City win their tie.

Considering TNS lost 7-0 on agg to Man City, one leg which had their reserve team iirc, and that was considered TNS 'upping their game', also considering TNS wanted to sign Ian Rush to play in the game for them, it wont be much of a contest.

Think the Liverpool game will be fun to watch - see a few goals anyway! Having said that, obviously Glens-Shels is the game I'm going to be watching.

I'm not convinced Glens v Shels will win the ratings war.

Shels v Deportivo was a big game against a quality Spanish side, accompanied by an awful lot of hype. The Glens fixture just isn't any of those.

Meanwhile, whilst TNS will prove weak opposition for Pool, it's not only their first competitive fixture since they won the European Cup, but their first competitive fixture of the season. There should be plenty of goals, and the Premiership heads will all be keen to see how Liverpool are looking with their new found confidence.

I therefore think we're all getting a bit carried away with talk of the Shels game stuffing the Pool one on the ratings front. I'll predict it won't.

    I'd go along with Steve.

I'll be very surprised, but delighted, [size=2]to see the $hel$ match draw a larger audience. The barstoolers must be getting fairly agitated by now, they musn't have seen an English team play for ...oh...weeks at this stage. Quite a large majority of them won't even realise that $hels are in the same competition and stage as Liverpool. They'll think it's some sort of inter-league game, nothing to do with real football.....

Don't underestimate the interest in this game Pete.....

The game at Anfield is a sell-out - unlike a number of other European games against much stronger sides that Liverpool played last season.

It also broke the club's record for number of tickets sold in a single day, and number of tickets sold online. There's clearly significant interest in this tie on Merseyside....

I think Everton bought all the seats with their money for finishing 4th, and will burn them, That way the game is in front of an empty Anfield!

In fairness to TV3 (and I seem to defend them a lot even though most of what they show is garbage)they are a commercial entity.

Yes the Shel-Glens match will have more viewers, I know I'll be watching it, but by showing the Pool game they avoid the logistical costs they would otherwise incur from showing a live domestic game. Even if it's up North they'll probably need their own equipment as I doubt it'll be live on BBC.

Therefore it makes sense for both sides that RTE, as the public service provider with greater resources, show the Shels-Glens match, and TV3 take the cheaper more commericially sensible option.

Can someone explain this blind faith/optimism that Glens v Shels is guaranteed to pull-in a bigger crowd than Liverpool v TNS ? Why will it be bigger than the European Cup winners first competitive match being shown live in a country where they have large support ?

Also - there's a good chance that Liverpool will have signed Figo by then. If they do, then his first appearance in a Pool shirt will be sufficient incentive to Joe Public on its own to wipe-out any hoped-for ratings victory for Glens v Shels.

Let's not get too carried away with ourselves...
