There are reports that the mobile phone network has been shut down by the security services - as some terrorist bombs in the past (Madrid?) have been activated remotely via mobile phone.

Its hard to distinguish between what is fact and what is rumour at the moment though.

The Department of Foreign Affairs has established special phone-lines for Irish people worried about friends and relatives caught up in this morning's explosions in London.
Anyone seeking information from Ireland can ring 1800 242 548, while people living in the UK can ring 0207 201 2501.

An emergency centre has also been established at the Irish Embassy in London to help Irish people affected by the explosions.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it was in constant contact with the London Embassy, but had no information on whether there were any Irish casualties
    The truth fears no questions...

Are all our English based correspondants ok?

and received this off a colleague who works for vodafone:

Due to the incidents across London today, Vodafone have invoked a procedure whereby cellular bandwidth is prioritised to government and emergency services.

rang my sister in Islington just now, she missed the explosions at her local tube in Aldgate by an hour. Thank God she's ok, was quite worried. Im glad everyone here is ok, but oh my God what an awful tragedy and to all those who have lost their lives, may they rest in peace.

Just got through to my mate who works in the City, 10 mins from Liverpool St. Got him on his mobile, so the networks must be available again. He was just on London Bridge, watching the exodus of workers going home. Hopefully the damage is now done, and over with..

Good to hear nobody from Foot.ie has been affected by this directly or even indirectly yet (apart from the inconvenience of course). I'd like to ask that this thread stick to this subject closely please, and not veer off into speculation and commentary on the political and social aspects of the event. If you need to do that, please start another thread.

Mobile networks are back up now, but they are very busy - not quite the same as the blanket which was imposed a while ago. I had a few mates who have been sent home from work, they were inbetween trains which were blown up which is a horrible thought.

there were a stream of ambulances racing in past our offices on the M4 a while ago, and traffic is erily quiet. Quite a lot of people have been requested to leave work and pick up their children from schools which are closer to the city.

Glad to hear people here are ok, and my thoughts are with anyone who is trying to make contact

Just my tuppence worth but while there are possibly still people trapped below ground in Kings Cross station and while those who've lost their lives haven't even gone cold yet I think it's inappropriate to start debating the politics behind this terrible string of attacks.

Thoughts and sympathies with all those affected -and it looks like there'll be many.

Glad to hear that my foot.ie comrades are accounted for. I have a few friends in London I am anxiously waiting emails from.
Hope the injured recover quickly and the dead RIP.

I'm glad to see all our fellow forum members and their families are alive and well. Sorry you were caught up in it Peader but at least you're ok. I'm afraid to see what kind of casualty picture is going to emerge once the dust settles.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

They're now saying 150 "seriously injured" according to a police commissioner on sky

Some of the reports of injuries are absolutely horrific.

Am waiting on e-mails myself from relatives in London. I think they all drive but I'll breath easier when the clock in.

Glad all the foot.ie gang seem to be okay.

Anyone else hear Ken Livingstone's speech? All I can say is "wow!". What a truly moving speech that was. Londoners will and should be proud.

Unlike Tony Blair's, that came across as genuinely sincere. It is the kind of thing that needs saying at moments like this. Freedom and people living together.

    From the BBC website -

The BBC's Security Correspondent Frank Gardner says BBC monitoring services have located a website linked to al-Qaeda with a 200-word statement saying it carried out the bombings.
Very vague, but no further info to go on at the moment...

I know its not the right way to start the message, but my brother gets the kings cross tube every morning to go to work and I have been trying to get in contact with him all morning! Turned out that he slept in and missed the train !
