    WYW v Galway

Wexford surrendered their hopes of a League title in a game of meagre quality in Ferrycarrig this evening. With very few chances created in the entire game, it took a goal of similar quality to the whole 90 minutes to decide the destination of the three points. Wexford started with Kiev, Lolly, Nicola, Della, Edel, Aoibheann, Lynn, Ciara, Ellen, Kylie and Sinead. Galway were the better side in the first half as they marginally looked the more likely to score. Wexford’s Kylie Murphy had a left-footed shot on target after three minutes which proved an easy save for Hayes Coen in the Galway goal. It would be a long time before Wexford would get another shot on target. On nine minutes, Kiev Gray, who was again very reliable in the Wexford goal, got down to save a Galway shot. Midway through the half, Kiev Gray was again called upon to make a save and then a Galway forward shot over the bar when well-placed inside the Wexford area. With players like McCarthy, Kinnevey and Brennan, and with Maebh De Burca playing in front of them, this Galway defence are not going to give up too many goals and Wexford looked like they had it all to do at half-time. 0-0 at half-time.

If the first half was bad, the second half was even worse as there was hardly a chance created by either team. Wexford did seem to up the tempo at the start of the second half but with Sinead Taylor looking very isolated up front and Savannah McCarthy dominating at the back for Galway, chances for the home side were very few indeed. Midway through the half, Edel Kennedy stretched to almost make contact with a Ciara Rossiter free and Ellen Molloy nearly created a chance by beating a couple of Galway defenders inside the Galway area. With ten minutes, to go, Kira Bates Crosbie came on as a sub for Wexford. The goal for Galway, when it came, was pretty calamitous for Wexford as a bad back-pass eventually led to Kiev Gray being caught out of position, and Aoibheann Costello knocked it home for a 1-0 lead for Galway. Wexford did more attacking in the final five minutes after concession of the goal which suggests that there was another gear available to the home side. Sinead Taylor was just unable to connect with a cross for Wexford and Ciara Rossiter thundered a shot off the crossbar but Galway held out to win by a goal to nil. Best for Wexford on a disappointing night were probably Edel Kennedy, Ciara Rossiter and Della Doherty.
