    WYW v DLR Waves

Wexford will be extremely pleased to travel back down the N11 tonight with the three points in the bag as they nicked a goal late on in a very tight and cagey game against DLR Waves in UCD this evening. With Lauren Dwyer and Teegan Lynch missing, Wexford started with Kiev, Lynn, Nicola, Della, Lolly, Aoibheann, Edel, Ellen, Kylie, Ciara and Kira. The game had very few chances overall as both sides struggled to create much in the final third. Other than the goal, Wexford’s best chance came in the first minute when Ciara ‘Rossi’ Rossiter was sent through on goal but Eve Badana in the Waves goal got down to save. In the sixth minute, Kylie Murphy of Wexford went down with an injury but fortunately was able to continue after treatment. After that, neither keeper was really tested in the first half with Kiev Gray having a quiet first half in the Wexford goal and Eve Badana having a couple of routine saves only as both sides cancelled each other out. With a few minutes remaining in the half, Wexford’s Lolly Conlon had a long range shot a yard over and Rossi had a lobbed shot which went over Badana’s head but also a couple of yards wide of the post. 0-0 at half-time with Wexford slightly shading it.

It was different at the start of the second half as DLR came more into the game and were unlucky not to score. DLR’s Jetta Berrill firstly had a header over the Wexford bar before Kiev Gray touched Jetta’s shot onto a post. With eleven minutes gone, a DLR forward looked to have a great chance when she got onto the end of a dangerous cross, but slightly on the stretch, clipped the ball over the Wexford bar from close in. With 15 minutes gone in the half, Sinead Taylor came on for Edel Kennedy. Sinead is a natural centre-forward and, when she plays, the shape of the forward-line for Wexford seems to improve significantly. Wexford then threatened from a couple of corners and Wexford’s Kylie Murphy and Ellen Molloy picked up yellows for tackles. With ten minutes left in the game, Sinead Taylor made a standard move down the left channel of the two DLR centre-halves, got fed the ball with a precise pass and smacked it home with her left to put Wexford ahead. DLR didn’t really threaten in the final minutes with late subs for Wexford being Emma Walker and Fiona Ryan. With the Wexford defence being under more pressure than usual, Wexford’s player of the game was Nicola Sinnott who was outstanding at the back for the away side while Della Doherty wasn’t too far behind. In goal, Kiev Gray handled everything that came at her with great efficiency and resulted in DLR ending up with no points when they deserved at least one from the game. 1-0 to Wexford at full-time.
