Well, this came out of nowhere - when I read that Hondermarck had been released by Norwich, I thought that he would drop far down the ladder, especially after he only played three times in a half-season loan to Harrogate. But he was picked up by Barnsley, put directly into their first-team squad and has come off the bench twice this season - well done to him and keep it up: https://www.the42.ie/hondermarck-cra...59495-Sep2021/
He's been playing league 2 since signing for Northampton in January. At 22, the odds of him returning to contention for a senior cap for us aren't especially high, though stranger things have happened. His links to Ireland seem weak enough - lived here from the age of about 4 to 18, parents are from different places, so he qualifies for several countries. I guess it's a logical decision for him and we should just wish him luck.
As soon as a player turns 24, they go from being a sorely neglected superstar in waiting to a has-been wasting space in the national team squad.
Congo Brazzaville
Is that the one where they drink Um Bongo?
The best of luck to him. Hope we will see him at an ANC finals in the near future. It takes a degree of commitment to declare for a country where there is long haul travel involved for every international window and where the team has had little success (Congo have only qualified for one of the last 10 ANCs), so I hope it works out for him there. Realistically he was unlikely to ever get an Ireland cap.
