    Wyw u19

Wexford U19 Women recorded a 2-0 victory against Bray this afternoon which was more comfortable than the scoreline suggests. With skipper Neema Nyangasi wearing a new boot cast, Wexford started with Maeve Williams, Beth Evesson, Breda Cushen, Seren Ward, Kira Bates Crosbie, Fiona Ryan, Laura Butler, Lauren McCormick, Becky Connaughton, Eimear Gabbett and Kate McDonald. Bray had an early shot a couple of yards wide of Maeve Williams’s goal but rarely threatened the Wexford goal thereafter. Sharpshooter Fiona Ryan for Wexford then pulled a shot a couple of yards wide before getting the next one on target but it proved an easy catch for the Bray keeper. Wexford were able to go a goal ahead a few minutes later when Beth Evesson made good progress down Wexford’s left before crossing to find Kira Bates Crosbie free in the Bray area and Kira finished neatly for 1-0 to Wexford. Fiona Ryan then smacked a shot against the Bray crossbar and over before later unleashing another swerving thunderbolt with her left to give the Bray keeper no chance and it was 2-0. 2-0 to Wexford at half-time. The second half saw Wexford again dominating but without being able to add to the scoreboard with Seren Ward and Wexford sub, Shannon Morrissey, going closest for the home side. In contrast, Bray never really threatened to knock anything past Maeve Williams in the Wexford goal and it finished 2-0 to Wexford at full-time.

Wexford will be disappointed to have dropped all three points in Ferrycarrig this afternoon after looking the better side in the first half. Wexford started with Jean Kavanagh Doyle, Beth Evesson, Fiona Ryan, Seren Ward, Breda Cushen, Megan Heffernan, Laura Butler, Cliodhna Donnelly, Lauren McCormack, Becky Connaughton and Kira Bates Crosbie. Wexford looked the better side in the first half with the excellent Bohs keeper ensuring that the Dublin side were still in the game at half-time. Fiona Ryan was firstly sent free down Wexford’s left to force the Bohs keeper to save well with her feet. It wasn’t long after when Wexford’s Lauren McCormack made good progress down their left to cross to find Kira Bates Crosbie free and her first-time finish put Wexford ahead by 1-0. Bohs then denied the Wexford forwards twice with good saves as Wexford broke the Bohs offside trap. Jean Kavanagh Doyle in the Wexford goal then punched away a dangerous Bohs cross before both keepers made good saves to prevent either side from adding to the scoreboard. 1-0 at half-time for Wexford with the home side in the ascendancy and Bohs only threatening through the lively Georgia Monks up front and a pacey right-winger.

In contrast, it was Bohs who threatened in the second half and went ahead through a first goal, an own goal as a Wexford defender headed past an advancing Kavanagh Doyle in the Wexford goal and then Georgia Monks to put Bohs 3-1 ahead. Breda Cushen forced a goal back for Wexford as she hit a good shot on target to force a Bohs defender to turn the ball into her own net to make it 3-2 for Bohs although the shot might have been going in anyway. Wexford applied a good deal of pressure towards the end but Bohs were able to hold out for a 3-2 win. In addition to the Wexford first-teamers of Kira Bates Crosbie and Fiona Ryan, best for Wexford were Lauren McCormick, Lauren Butler and Cliodhna Donnelly.
