Dame Kelly Holmes, double Olympic champion, Trafalgar Square
I'm very nervous and feel quite sick. Whatever happens we've put in a brilliant bid and have done ourselves proud. The support here is absolutely marvellous. If we get the Games it would change the whole of Great Britain and leave an excellent legacy. The Olympic movement and spirit stays with you for life and it would change everyone's perceptions on sport.

Well done London. It'll be great to have an olympics on our doorstep. They put in an amazing bid and presentation, and thoroughly deserve it.

I reckon Becks saying that "I'll`be furtee-sevon when dey comes around, and I''ll come outa retoirement to play on my manor....innit" was what really won it for them....

    i like that.

but joe, how does it make any difference to us as a nation having it "on our doorstep", why did the french bother bidding then? Is that going to be consolation for them, ah well sure we have the olympics on our doorstep, actually we have it a 4/5 closer than ireland, thats even better....

When I read about all the training camps in Cyprus before the games in Athens, it got me thinking that the likes of UL, the Mardyke in Cork and Morton Stadium in Santry are ideal locations for such camps before the games in London. If we are clever enough, we can make London work well in our favour.

england i would assume has better training facilities and resources than greece surely, and by then certainly will have in place, as the other major cities jump on the bandwagon and start wanting their piece.

You work in London that could be why they are getting excited . We are all very happy, and everyone here was over the moon.

The thing that fecks me off about London winning the Olympics is that it has to take something major like that to get the government to grow any balls and spend some sorely needed money on the city's infrastructure.

What is it with the English/English government that they're pretrified of spending any public money, and will only do so if they can dress it up/hide it behind some big wonder spectacle like the Olympics (Cross rail, East London line extension, redevelopment of Stratford) the Millenium (Jubilee Line extension, redevelopment of North Charlton), Commonwealth Games (redevelopment of East Manchester) etc ?

I blame the Thatcher years. Convinced everyone that the State could only ever feck things up, so shouldn't be allowed to spend any money, and that the money not spent in this should be given out 6to individuals instead in tax cuts. Sick.....

I wish London hadn't got the Olympics - not out of disinterest or petty Oirish rivalry, but because it would then highlight the fact that the government here are too scared of spending money where it's needed.

P.S. Buy yourself a house in Stratford quickly....

Peader - a lot of that would've been acclimitisation by the numerous countries around the world who can afford such luxuries and aren't used to the stifling Summer heat of Athens. The only really wealthy nations in the world with hot weather are Australia and Japan (the likes of South Africa & Brazil aren't particularly wealthy; the likes of the US, Canada and New Zealand aren't warm nations overall). The rest had the money and the will to acclimatise back in 2004.

London will be the reverse of that - why would anyone from the US, Canada, Germany etc need or want to come to Ireland in advance of the games ? It's just more flying and hassle for the athletes, and more expense for the sports authorities concerened, with no clear benefit. A small number may want to come to somewhere to break up their very long flights (Aus, NZ and Japan, for example) and settle-in away from the hub-bub, but why would they more likely to do that in Ireland than, say the Home Counties, the West Country, or even Scotland/Wales ? Or even Northern France near the Eurostar ?

Would manchester and their facillities not benefit, given they had the commonwealth games. ITs all good, plenty of work to be had now.

I wonder how much the bribes went for this year... IOC is as corrupt a world organisation that you could hope to find.

I think the UK/London will have problems with infrastructure delays. IMO Paris would be quicker as French are used to spending public money on state projects.
