    electric drum machines
bit of a paradox, or maybe more ironic, that to me.

ya dumb is a good example, megadeth addicted to chaos the very begining the drum intro itself is class, but the cymbals are used to great effect.

Keith Moon on pretty much any Who track. Rarely used Hi-Hats in the conventional sense (i.e. footpedal closed and "chick-chick-chicking" away on them) liked to create a wash of cymbal sounds occasionally broken by a smack of 20" crash or a gong. There was a myth when I was a kid learning drums that he didn't even have Hats set up which is nonsense -but he played 'em loose and washy. Tended to use the left bass-drum pedal a lot so unless he grew a third leg somewhere wasn't bothered with tight Hi-Hats.

Stewart Copeland was another drummer who could use his cymbals to maximise their dynamic qualities though coming from a largely different school of thought to Moon.

Crossing the rock spectrum in another direction ...Lars Ulrichs ability to "arrest" cymbal crashes behind James Hetfield crunching away is just the fcukin dogs nads. Intro to 'Master of Puppets' or 'Battery' are class examples. They do a lot of it on that LP actually (Master of Puppets - Metallica 1986) 'Disposable Heroes' and 'Damage Inc' have quite a bit of it too and it's fantastic.
" I wish to God that someone would be able to block out the voices in my head for five minutes, the voices that scream, over and over again: "Why do they come to me to die?"
