    WYW v DLR Waves

Wexford kept their noses in the title race as they put in an encouraging performance against DLR Waves in Ferrycarrig this evening. Wexford started with Kiev, Lolly, Nicola, Lauren D, Rossi, Aoibheann, Lynn Marie, Aisling, Ellen and with Kylie and Blessing up front. New Wexford manager, Stephen Quinn, appeared to put his stamp on the team by demanding more emphasis on possession and it led to Wexford playing most of the game in their opponent’s half but with the task of trying to break the opposition down. On six minutes, Blessing Kingsley nearly got on the end of a cross by Ciara Rossiter. This was followed up by two efforts on goal by Ellen Molloy, one of which was deflected for a corner and the second of which was pushed away by Eve Badana in the DLR goal. With 24 minutes gone, Lynn Marie Grant stretched to head a corner by Aoibheann Clancy back in the direction it had come from, and Wexford were a goal in front. DLR’s first real effort on the Wexford goal came on 28 minutes when a shot drifted about a yard over the Wexford crossbar. Wexford continued to dominate possession for the remainder of the first half with Aoibheann Clancy and Lynn Marie Grant dominating in midfield. A deserved 1-0 lead for Wexford at halftime.

Wexford continued to apply much of the pressure in the second half and, on eleven minutes, Rossi couldn’t make the right contact from reasonably close in and Eve Badana was able to grab the effort. Second goal came for Wexford on twenty minutes from a Wexford corner and Lolly Conlon was able to prod it home from close in. This was followed by a decent effort on the DLR goal by Rossi and Ellen Molloy hitting the DLR post with subs for Wexford about this time including Lynn Craven, Doireann Fahey and Sinead Taylor. With ten minutes to go, DLR were given a lifeline when Nicola Sinnott was adjudged to have handled a cross by a DLR attacker standing about two feet away and Carla McManus knocked the peno home effortlessly to make it 2-1. However, Wexford restored their two-goal cushion almost immediately when Ellen Molloy went on a mazy run down the right wing and her cross/shot was knocked home with the aid of a major deflection by a DLR defender to make it 3-1. Further Wexford subs were Freya De Mange and Lauren Kelly and after a decent effort on goal by DLR’s Niamh Prior, Wexford had secured the three points they needed on the basis of a 3-1 home win. Best for Wexford were Aoibheann and Lynn Marie with Wexford looking most threatening when they can get the ball to the feet of Ellen Molloy in space in an advanced position. For DLR, Jess Gleeson and Niamh Barnes proved hard to beat in the middle of the DLR defence. 3-1 to Wexford at fulltime.
