    Development of Referees

As part of the FAI Technical Development Plan, the Association has identified the development of refereeing as one of its key priorities. To this end, a Consultation Forum is being held on tomorrow, Saturday 25th June 2005, at the Red Cow Hotel in Dublin.

The aim of this forum is to outline to all stakeholders in Irish football the progress that has been made to date in developing refereeing here, and seeking ideas to resolve some of the issues that are currently preventing further development.

The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.

Sounds good, might attract a few more to get involved?

Were any fans reps invited or are we not considered stakeholders?

If it was an open forum, a days notice and a bit on the website is hardly encouraging.
If you attack me with stupidity, I'll be forced to defend myself with sarcasm.

    About time...

....The referees in the league are the biggest joke!Every single one of them should seriously consider there position as referees when there judgement in situations can make or break a competition Eg-Cork V Shelbourne
    EG-Galway V Cork
Both these extremely poor decisions cost both Galway and Cork progressing in the respective competitions Im not stating that all ref's are poor but the majority are!

have you ever been a ref?
Have you ever read the 'Laws of the Game'?
What authority have you to say the refs are the biggest joke?

    I know
    you're wrong.

Get the rules of the game (from the fai or probably online) get some knowledge of the rules. Not just you, everyone who likes the game - even the top players do not know the rules - it pi**es me off!!!!

    Hang on a minute.

I am a qualified FAI referee, and I ref at underage level.

Some of the decisions we see week in week out are a disgrace.

Take last night, for example, I don't know the refs name, but he was the one who looks like Basil Fawlty.

He booked Bobby Ryan, who had NOT been consistantly fouling for the most inocuous challenge.

Five minutes Jason Byrne was through, was tripped, got a free, so there WAS a foul, and no card?

I'm sure Longford Town supporters have some stories to tell themselves.

The standard of refereeing in the eL is abysmal.

We would all agree that referees have a very difficult job and fair play to them for stepping into the firing line, but often they bring a lot of the grief they get upon themselves with poor decisions! I have seen some decisions in the Showgrounds that are beyond belief (not just against Rovers) and I'm sure every EL fan could tell similar stories. Having said that, we had Neil Doyle for the Cobh game at the weekend and it was hard to have any complaints. He wasn't overly fussy and let the game flow.

Anything that would aid in the development of referees certainly wouldn't hurt!

Have to agree about Neil Doyle, however can't say the same for either of his linesmen, on two occasions they allowed the taking of blatant foul throws.
I notice that the incorrect taking of throws, (i.e not throwing the ball completely over your head) has crept in to most levels of the game. It might seem trivial but it annoys the life out of me.

agreed. its a minor thing, but why have rules if people won't adhere to them.
