    Richard Whiteley dies

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/4625119.stm

Watched Countdown religiously, especially over the past year (it's the ultimate students' programme.)
Man was a legend with his terrible jokes and puns and his constant flirting with Carol.

Dunno if they'll continue Countdown, but it'll never be the same.

That's frightening, the man was still only 61. He was a bit of an institute on afternoon TV. Rest in peace.

    He didn't even look 61.

No doubt they'll try but I don't think they could replace him on Countdown.

    RIP.

jesus that was so out of the blue I didn't believe it at first, I didn't even know he was sick or anything.

I can't see countdown going on without him, it wouldn't be the same.

I'm shocked. I loved watching Countdown on a lazy afternoon. Richard Whiteley was a very enjoyable guy to watch on the TV.

    really sad news.
used always watch countdown if it was on .
he was a consumate pro always ready with the puns and self depriciating humour.
despite all that though i believe he was highly educated with a degree in english or something not quite sure .
    anyway RIP Richard.

Have only seen the news now and its a shock. Countdown is an institution on Channel 4 and Richard Whiteley was its face. Can't see the show going on in his absence.

    RIP Richard Whiteley

cant see the show carrying on without Mr. Whiteley. Great moments on the show, especially when swear words came up. Kept me entertained on many a day when i was a government artist way back.... RIP

He was the only guy who could get away with telling the worst jokes in history. He'll be sorely missed, Countdown will never be the same again. Its funny how it was popular with students, I can remember when in college coming home after nights out with friends and we would watch late night repeats of Countdown. There's nothing like doing the maths segment when your drunk.
Limerick 37, its so shiny and new we dare not take the cover off.

Whenever I was home early from College, I used always watch, and my mum would usually be watching too...I got "scrotum" one day - seven letters, but how do you tell your mum that?! It actually beat both contestants as well I think, but dictionary corner got it...

Did you have to show your mam the note paper - as proof you got it?

Was that part of the Noel Edmonds gotcha stunt? Anyone have the rest of it?

    Terrible news about Whiteley.

    RIP
