    WYW v Athlone

Wexford had to work extremely hard to overcome Athlone who put in a powerfully resolute performance in Ferrycarrig this evening. It took a late penalty by Kylie Murphy to put daylight between the two teams with the visitors also finishing with nine players. Wexford started with Kiev, Lolly, Nicola, Lynn, Aoibheann, Edel, Ciara, Ellen, Kylie, Aisling and Lauren D in what looked like a 3-4-1-2 formation. Although Wexford had the better of the first half, they found it hard to force Ronayne in the Athlone goal to make any meaningful saves. Aisling Frawley, Kylie and Edel Kennedy had some early shots at the Athlone goal as the visitors were more or less stuck in their own half for much of the first period. However, real chances for Wexford were scarce with Edel Kennedy lifting a first-time shot from close in over the Athlone crossbar when well set up by Kylie Murphy about the 30 minute mark. Athlone had their best chance of the first half about four minutes later when Kiev Gray in the Wexford goal had to stretch over a crowded goalmouth, but the ball was cleared by the Wexford defence for a corner. With ten to go in the half, Kim Flood came on for Wexford for Lolly Conlon who had got a smack of the ball in the head. In the last action of the half, Athlone’s Devaney got a yellow for a mistimed tackle. 0-0 at half-time with neither goalkeeper having had much to do.

Second half continued in much the same vein with Wexford having more of the game but not really stretching Ronayne in the Athlone goal. Lauren Dwyer got an early header for Wexford but Ronayne in the Athlone goal managed to gather at the second attempt. With fifteen gone, Athlone’s Devaney got a second yellow for another tackle and Athlone were down to ten. It didn’t sway the game much, however, as Athlone continued to look very solid at the back. However, with less than ten minutes to go, a rash tackle in the Athlone penalty area led to the referee awarding a peno to Wexford and Kylie Murphy tucked it away nicely to put the home side a goal ahead. Further substitutions at this point for Wexford had included Sinead Taylor and Lynn Marie Grant. With six to go, Owens of Athlone got a straight red for a tug on Ellen Molloy’s jersey as the latter was running though on goal and Athlone were down to nine. Even with nine players, Athlone managed to force a free-kick into Wexford’s penalty area in injury-time, but the Wexford defence managed to clear and Wexford were happy to hear the final whistle and the three points secured. Best for Wexford were Aoibheann Clancy who excelled in midfield and Ciara Rossiter with Kim Flood and Lynn Marie Grant also impressing after coming on as substitutions. Athlone put in a smashing performance and, with a bit more luck, could well have gone away with a point. 1-0 to Wexford at full-time.
