all that money the irish public pump into the premiership each year (€190m was it?!) was diverted into the irish league...![]()

We could buy Samuel Eto'o, and have him rotate weekly around clubs!Originally Posted by Buller

Where did you get that figure of €190m.
Its sad really if its true. Sad.
Or keep players like Pat McCourt...Originally Posted by EnDai

nearly 50 euro per person per year ! ! can this be right? and if its just the prem. that doesn't even include all those Celtic shirtsOriginally Posted by Buller
50 euro a year for every person. Well some poeple will buy a jersey. Others will buy merchantise of different categories and then there are the people who go over and watch the game or subscribe to tv station to watch the matches. Its easy to see the money add up.
If the league is still ignored as a media and marketing commodity, even with €190m, it would do very little. Without big crowds at games, Sky Sports hype and impressive stadia the league will always 'look crap' to the Premiership fan. No money will change that. Glamour sells.....whatever else the eircom league may be, it is not glamourous. It's simply a league of minority interest.
Any ideas on figures for how many Irish footy fans (as opposed to fans of Irish footy) travel to Britain each week to watch a game? I'd be surprised if it exceeds the gate of any eircom club.

How many Irish footie fans watch the Premiership each week is more apt a question. Its a viscious circle. If they had a team like Liverpool on their doorstep they would go to the games every week, but at some point in Liverpools past they were small enough and people from the area kept them going thru hard work and attendance of matchs thru the bad spells. You need fans to boost a club. You need an attractive option to lure fans. Fans will bring revenue, which is needed to make the game attractive. If, take Tolka Park, was jammed each week. I mean 10-11,000 people at a game, the games would dramatically change. Not only would you get roughly 100,000 per gate, you would have a cracking atmosphere. Its funny, you wouldn't think it would be hard to get 10,000 people to go to a game in the Capital of a countryShame really. Imagine Bohs vs Sligo Rovers with a jam packed Dalymount all round...
200,000 Sky Sports Subscribers @ €60 a month over 12 months, all owning at least one PL jersey.
Do maths its scary.
Sky figure out of dat its from last July imahgine its more now sports package is what its based on.

It's all nonsense.
still aghast at that 190m euro figure - that effectively represents the turnover of Arsenal or Chelsea -104m sterling for 2003-04 and only smaller than Man U. at175m - put another way; the total turnover for that season between all the prem. clubs was 1.24bn - about 1.85bn euro, which means that figure of 190m represents about 10% pf the total - we're supporting 2 clubs out of 20!
190m is not true.
Not every one of the 200,000 Sky subscribers do so for Premiership football & i;d be surprsied if 50k jerseys sold every season.
Progress of irish football doesn't depend on killing interest in the EPL. It has to co-exist like other European countries.
The people who travel to the UK for matches are not the problem as i'm sure many go to eL games too. The problem is people who support foreign clubs & also look down on the eL without ever having attended a game here.
Inclined to agree - does anyone - Buller? since you started it - have a sourceOriginally Posted by pete
I'd imagine that some of that money is spent on air fares and accomodation. Seems very high to be going directly to premiership clubs considering their overall turnover.
ill double check it but i still believe its fairly accurate as it includes all the costs involved. Im not sure whether it includes the SPL or not though, ill try and find the source for you...

Dont know if the 190 figureis correct but now that a possible figure has been observed, what do you do about it ??
The SFAI are the governing body for grassroots football in Ireland, not the FAI. Its success or the lack of is all down to them.
