On the contrary, TNS FC is much more original than just naming it after the hometown, and this is actually a name foreigners can pronounce. Imagine the journalists losing their reputation over Llansantffraid FC
Because they changed their name to TNS. If Shels were to change their name to JW Hire FC, I can't imagine you'd be too pleased!
We're not arrogant, we're just better.

PSV is an abbreviation of Philips sporting club (in Dutch obviously )

The Club was bourne out of the sports clubs the company had for workers.
Granted that they're not likely to play inter-firm anymore , but they're strongly linked to the Phillips company.

In fairness though, that's slightly different to renaming a club after a sponsor though

For the record, my PSV point was in no way meant to defend TNS, who are sell-outs

To drag this even more off topic than it already is. Aren't FK Ekranas that City are playing another team named after some company or other?
They say what about the meek?

The FAI/IRFU are selling the naming rights to the revamped Lansdowne Road.
Arsenal have already sold the rights to Ashburton Grove.
Llantsanffraid incorporting Oswestry Town would be the alternative name folks. I am afraid in some situations regarding football he who pays the piper calls the tune.

P.S. Budweiser offered to fully develop the stadium in UCD in return for the naming rights in the late 1980's but the UCD Authorities would not allow the ground to be renamed Budweiser Park.

While Gerrit does spout some ridiculous rubbish about national teams and 'imaginary borders', I think he has a point on this one. TNS is really no different to PSV Eindhoven or Bayer Leverkusen. PSV are known more as PSV than Eindhoven, the PSV basically stands for Phillips, the electronics company. The club comes from the company Phillips. Similarily Bayer is the name of the medical drugs company which Leverkusen has come from and is associated with. So PSV, or Bayer is no different to TNS really. Yeah TNS renamed a club that they bought, but who'll care about that in 50 years time? A lot of people here weren't even aware of the PSV name, I bet even more about Bayer....

Many companies have a football team on amateur level. No one cares to play them. Just look at the Leinster Senior League and observe there are teams named Dublin Bus, Garda, ...

Many companies have a team, and very occasionally the team grows professional or semi-professional. Examples are PSV, Bayer Leverkusen, I'd even say UCD is (even though it's more an institution than a company). And in the former USSR it was so common to name your club after a government department (Dinamo Moscow, Lokomotiv Moskow, CSK Army Moscow, ...). In England we have Vauxhall Motors in the league just below the Conference.

I don't really see the problem supporting a team with its roots in a company. What I do regret is Austrian teams naming themselves after their sponsors and thus changing names every x years. Austria Salzburg if officially simply Austria Salzburg, but labelled themselves first as Casino Salzburg, then Wuestenrot Salzburg, and now... Red Bull Salzburg
