Steau are former bloody winners of the thing, how good are they now? We'll have to be playing at our best when Europe comes around, Glentoran will be well up for the games and if we beat them than we'd have to cause an absolutley massive upset to get through. It's doable though, hopefully but not playing the way we are now, we wouldn't even get to Romania.

Can't see $hels in the draw for the 3rd round now......

They really need a HUGE improvement in form and some serious luck.....

I was thinking the same. Even though the Setanta Cup passed peacefully it would be a huge security risk for a Dublin team to travel North on the 12th.

Would've thought that was better - definitely a live tie....

Before the draw a Swedish newspaper (Aftonbladet) had reviewed all possible opponents for Malmö FF. Here's what they said about Steua:

    2 out of 5
"Defensively strong Steua is no easy team to meet. They have a few talented players such as Mirel Radoi and the veteran Dorinel Munteanu. But it feels as Malmö are better and stronger than Steau".

    Draw your own conclusions....

I hadn't noticed that before now, I don't think that's the best date in the whole calendar for this fixture in East Belfast, TBH.

I would say that Steaua would be no better or worse than split so it is not the worst draw they could have gotten, they could have gotten, Celtic, Liverpool, Anderlecht now that would have been a tough tie.

What a mouth watering tie. Good money spinner for both clubs. Theoretically attendences should be good with it easy for away fans travel. An Irish side is guaranteed to be in Round 2 now.

Should Shels get through Steaua aren't the worst draw. Obviously it's good to avoid Celtic, Liverpool, Anderlecht, Dynamo Kiev, Partizan and Lokomotiv Moscow. I think Steaua are one of the more doable (that's not a real word is it?) teams.

Money wise it's probably better, getting through wise it's worse.

is Romania a summer or winter league, when does their season start?

It's the conventional late summer/early Autumn to May kind of league I think. Don't know exact dates. Steaua won the European Cup in the 1980's but that was under communist rule when the best players could not leave until their late 20's. After Celtic I think they are the only side to win the European Cup with an entirely homegrown team. Maybe Crvena Zvezda did as well, not sure.

That is exactly what i was thinking. First of all the 1st round draw isn't exactly straightforward. For all the talk of the North being the poor cousins , I think it will be tough for Shels. As others have pointed out , they will need to improve drastically, because even if they do win out over the Glens they will be in a far tougher draw with Steaua than they had against Hajduk last year.

Steaua did well in the uefa cup last year , qualifying from the group stages of a group with Parma

    Athletic 4 3 0 1 11 4 9
    Steaua 4 2 0 2 4 3 6
    Parma 4 2 0 2 5 6 6
    Besiktas 4 1 1 2 7 7 4
    Standard 4 1 1 2 4 11 4

they then knocked out Valencia in the next round and were unluckily knocked out by Villareal in the next round. So they will be no push-overs.

Here is their record in european comps. :

    european records
Competition AP Pld W D L GF GA

    ECCC 17 83 33 21 29 125 116
    ECWC 11 40 14 12 14 51 54
    UEFA Cup 9 46 15 14 17 58 61
    UEFA Super Cup 1 1 1 0 0 1 0
    Total 38 170 63 47 60 235 231

    Prediction:

Shels to snuff it in the 2nd round.

No idea how good Steau are but Romania is crap draw for any hope of tv money.

Might get a lot of Romanian ex-pats at the game though?

IMO Shel$ will do well to get past Glentoran. Shel$ will have everything to lose as favourites & in current form can't even beat Rovers & only scrapped past Kildare County.
