    WYW v Peamount

Wexford will be pleased with the level of performance but gutted with the result as they shaded a very tight and crucial game in Ferrycarrig this afternoon until the vital last five minutes. With Lynn-Marie Grant making her debut in midfield for the home side, Wexford started with Kiev, Nicola, Lauren, Lolly, Ciara, Aisling, Edel, Aoibheann, Lynn-Marie and with Ellen and Kylie playing the most forward for Wexford. The game didn’t produce many clear-cut chances with the defences of both sides tending to dominate. However, Wexford certainly played more of their football in their opponent’s half. Aine O’Gorman had a header at the far post over the bar for Peamount on three minutes. Then Aisling Frawley for Wexford had a shot saved by Reid-Burke (NRB) in the Peamount goal on seven. Wexford’s Aoibheann Clancy brushed the top of the Peamount netting from a free-kick just on the twenty minute mark. On 24 minutes, Aisling Frawley just couldn’t control the ball in front of the Peamount goal as Wexford continued to make progress. With ten minutes to go in the half, ‘Rossi’ Rossiter dragged a shot a yard wide on the stretch after a good Wexford move. A late yellow card for Stephanie Roche of Peamount finished the half as Wexford went in at the break happily enough at 0-0.

Second half continued in more or less the same vein with few chances for either side. Ellen Molloy got an early yellow for Wexford before Rossi worked NRB in the Peamount goal with a shot on target. On 26 minutes, the Peas had a decent shout for a peno but nothing was given. The crucial incidents in the game occurred in the final six minutes. Firstly, Rossi was taken down inside the Peas’ penalty area for a clear peno but Kylie Murphy drilled the spot-kick against the inside of the near post and away. Two minutes later, Ellie Ryan-Doyle tried a speculative shot from a wide 30 yards angle and it sailed with the wind into the top corner of the Wexford goal to give Kiev Gray no chance for a 1-0 lead to Peamount. Late subs for Wexford were Sinead Taylor and Lynn Craven but Peamount just edged home at the final whistle with a 1-0 win. With defences on top, the star players were probably Lauren Dwyer and Ciara Rossiter for Wexford and Claire Walsh and Dearbhaile Beirne for Peamount but I’ll just mention also Aoibheann Clancy and Edel Kennedy in the midfield for Wexford who just gave them the nudge there. 1-0 to Peamount at full-time.
