As a bit of practice for my course, i've decided to make an football manager style game, open source.id like to keep it pretty simple, firstly because i have other commitments, and secondly because I hope to release it for mobile phones too.
i have built some basic classes, but Im just wondering if any other eL fans with some programming knowledge want to get on board. i plan to write the programme in Java, but I know VB.NET too, and have the professional studio.
So 2 questions:
1) would foot.ie eL fans be interested in such a game?
2) anyone able to help out?

1) Of course
2) Haven't done anything in Java in a few years, and even then I only did 1 year of it in college. I would be more able to help out if it was in C, and to a slightly lesser extent C++. [edit] But would be happy to try and get Java compiling on the new pc and refreshing my memory with it all, generally handy enough with the coding aspects of things (Recently finished a Quake3 Mod for college, so ok I guess )

Ditto for me too.

Gavinzac i would be well up for this. havent done any 3d java stuff, but am fairly confident in the aul java.
pm me if you want more info etc.
how do you plan on breaking it up etc?

Just feed me more VB,Just pour my beer,And get my smokes, And go away
ive done three years of java but im fairly crap at it! but would be willing to give it a go!
gavin a few things to note here as well. if you were getting help with it, you couldnt really use it as part of a course project especially if its open source, because anyone can add to it etc.
how is the game going to look?? i mean have you thought out what it will look like?

i wouldnt be submitting it or anything, it'd just be something to keep me programming over the summer.Originally Posted by paul_oshea

dont ye mean J2ME
ah ya fair enough, but you would still want it visually appealing if ye know what i mean.
you could split it up between techies and non techies, if people are interested and want it but cant offer technical assistance then they could get all stats etc.
btw its a lot more difficult to do this stuff for mobiles as the classes used are completely different and a lot of those that exist for j2se dont exist in the micro edition.

thanks for the encouragement lads. anyone who's interested in giving it a shot, PM me. input from the start on how to go about doing it is very helpful
this was my plan for the game's match logic: (i know its simplistic, but it can always be expanded once its working)
every player has a score in each position, like GK, SC etc, champ manager style.
the player (user, person playing the game) puts a player (soccer player...) into each position, and during the game, each area of the field is compared between the players in that area. such as in midfield it would compare Midfield Centre players against the opposition Midfield Centre's, strikers versus defenders, and so on.
from this, an overall score could be gotten for each team.
this would then be affected by the tactics each player (human or AI) selects. i'd propose using the ould rock paper scissors principle that is used in so many video games. the tactics could be split into different areas
the 3 ive come up with are playing style (direct/ wide/ continental passing), play agression (attacking/ defensive / medium), and pre-match motivation (pressure / calm / medium).
id like to have a transfer system but its wrecking my head trying to think of a way to implement it simplisticly

one good thing about this would be that, while it'll start as an eL game, after its done and working, theres nothing stopping it from being for other leagues, you'd just have to change the names and scores of players and clubs.

if you go down the road of AI things could get very tricky, but then again its hard to see it working in a "realistic" way without a bit of AI, otherwise you would have no consistency among games and teams etc.this would then be affected by the tactics each player (human or AI) selects

each club could have a prefered style, say city's would be firstly passing, then wide, then direct. shel's would be more direct, etc.Originally Posted by paul_oshea

I just Pm'd you Gavin. I'll have a think and I'll be back onto you in a few days. I would love to be able to make this happen!
The glass isn't half full or half empty it's just too damn big!
Here's a resource you may find handy for mobile devices.
Have Boot Disk, will travel
I should be able to supply audio for the game. Let me know the formats and styles and I'll see what I can do. www.sonicart-media.com
