Just been watching a programme on ITV

"World of Sport Archives" - showing clips from the ITV Sport Archives from the 1970's / 1980's

Lo and behold - one of them was Mick O'Brien sitting on the crossbar and breaking it in Athlone

I don't get ITV on the Sky set up but I'd love to see that again. I believe that he would have been lynched by the Harps fans if the game was abandoned to be replayed as Town were 5-0 down. He came to St. Mel's in the early 90s as manager of Black Diamond for a pre season fiendly and hinted that he had been put up to it by a member of the committee!!!!!

I think that was shown all over the world at the time.

All keepers are mad but Athlone have had two real loopers - O'Brien and Shane Curran. Curran was goalkeeper/captain for Roscommon today against Mayo and is still acting the maggot but he's loved by the Ros fans just like he was at Athlone.
