Galway consider FAI objection � report

Galway United could lodge a formal objection to the Football Association of Ireland after Monday night�s controversial exit from the FAI Carlsberg Cup at the hands of Premier Division leaders Cork City at Turners Cross.

The Tribesmen, despite languishing near the foot of the First Division table, took Cork to a replay and the game was still in the melting pot 20 minutes from the end of Monday�s game.

However, Galway were rocked by a hotly-disputed penalty awarded to the home side by Cork referee Alan Kelly, and after John O�Flynn put the Leesiders ahead from the spot, Galway�s chances of a revival were all but ended by the subsequent red card for dissent shown to midfielder Colin Fortune.

According to a report in Wednesday�s Irish Daily Star, the Terryland Park club are angry over the appointment of Cork official Kelly to take charge of such a high-profile match involving Cork City.

Any official protest from Galway could bring no real end result as far as the club�s interest in this season�s competition goes, but the club may hope it will prevent contentious referee appointments in the future.

I think Galway deserve a pat on the back for highlighting (and that's not a cryptic reference to Alan Kelly's hair

) a ridiculous situation where a match official is from the same town/city as the home side.
Last mondays game could have been reffed by a Limerick or Waterford set of officials.

Referees chief defends Cup appointment

Pat Kelly, the Development Officer of the Irish Soccer Referees Society, has defended the decision to appoint Cork referee Alan Kelly for Monday night�s FAI Carlsberg Cup clash between Cork City and Galway United at Turners Cross.

The second round replay was deadlocked until 20 minutes from the final whistle when Alan, the son of referees� chief Kelly, awarded a controversial penalty to the home side.

sure why dont city complain every time we have a dublin ref, that way we will just have no refs

its decisions lads, thats what football is all about, you win some, you lose some. we won that one, you can be sure a bad decision for us is only around the corner

...is the rest of our season seems to be heading nowhere were as yee will probably win the league.That was and should have been the highlight of our season and it was taken away from us .

.. to stop whinging. We should have beaten Cork City fair and square in Terryland Park anyway. One of the main problems we have at United
is this whingy "we're only a small club from the West" syndrome.

Leave it now, lets beat Dublin City tonight and concentrate on moving up the league, quickly.

Just one question would Alan Kelly have been picked to referee the game if it was Shels,Bohs, Rovers et al. We should have objected last saturday and we didnt because were seen as a soft touch we didnt.

I saw on another board that Kelly was chosen only AFTER you objected to McKeon handling the replay, have any of you heard this, not sure if it's true

probably after John Stacey the referees assessor talked to him at length after the game. In fairness to him it was the linesman who had the clearest view of the penalty incident and he bottled it when everyone in the ground stared on in disbelief.

We should have objected to Alan Kelly as soon as we knew he was reffing the game as he has "done" us before especially against Drogheda in the playoffs so its a little late doing anything now but on a point of principle I think we should senjd a letter about the refereeing standards in both games.
