    Cross-border competition extended

    June 16, 2005

The cross-border Setanta Cup is set to be increased from six to eight teams for its second edition next year.

Linfield won the first running of the tournament last month, defeating eircom League champions Shelbourne in a meeting between the two reigning league champions either side of the border.

The other two Irish League sides to compete this year – Glentoran and Portadown – will again join the Blues in the tournament next season, while the fourth representative of the Irish League will be the winners of next season’s CIS Insurance Cup.

The four competing eircom League sides will be decided later in the year.

Brilliant news if I get it right which means that the Lge Cup gets a place. It gives the competition (Lge Cup) value and is a brilliant platform for any teams like ourselves (now that we should start to take it seriously) to win and then with the Setanta cash to go on and compete in the League in future, this is good news for football me thinks

    Am I being too optomistic?

i think so... cant see setanta wanting to hand bray or dublin city etc €40,000 for qualifying then watch them draw crap crowds and lose every game...

I dont think that the crowds Bray would draw would be worse than what half of last years Setanta matches had and how do you know that we'd lose every game

Has anyone actually confirmed that our league cup down South will gain entry? Also will the competition be at the same time next year or Decemeber as I have heard in some places?
