My question is, why does smoking have to be bad for you?

Off them nearly 5 weeks now, but why can't they just be like drink - okay in moderation? Or even better like red wine, where a couple of smokes in the evening actually do you good? Proof there is no God...

Well if Tony Blair pandered to Bertie, I'm sure we'd get over it too.

Wasn't there some suggestion that it helped reduce the risk of Alzheimer's?

Sometimes people think of infinity in numerical terms but never consider how it applies to us and our very existence.
Numerical terms of infinity can cause confusion as you can always add one to a number to make it bigger and at what point in the number chain is infinity reached is the question usually asked, but it doesn't work that way. Take Positive Integers, this set is infinite as they are unbounded. Its not at any point it becomes infinite. It is infinite. In relation to our existance, I consider humans to be no more to the earth as ants would be to a forest. It could be considered incredibly arrogent of us to consider ourselves as anything more than a bi-product of a plantary system. The concept of God and religion somewhat smells of arrogence on our part that we alone in an eco-system of billions of creatures are the only bunch that get to continue after life. God in my opinion is the gap between our current knowledge and the unknown. It always has been considering the re-definition of God over the course of our history.

Thats great. It helps reduce the risk of Alzheimers by killing you with lung or throat cancer before you get to an age Alzheimers kicks in. Justifying smoking is not really worth doing. If you smoke, you are damaging your body. If you wish to ignore this, that is all fine and funky. But suggesting its in someways good for you is a bit niave. I am sure getting caught in a nuclear fallout might stop some disease but its not really the point.......

I really hoped that this can of worms wouldn't get opened.
We're going to have a religious debate now and someone is going to get banned.
I don't have any religious beliefs, thank God.

Didn't know debate on this subject was venturing into bannable material. I wasn't debating the nature of religions. I don't really mind what people get up to as long as they don't make me do it . It's in Off Topic. I assumed this was some level of discussion on topics off football? If you mention infinity, god is unavoidable seeing as the concept is religions way of defining infinity and most of the world is of some religion.

Hence there is no God. My question that I wanted answered was why it was bad for you, not some numpty stating the bleeding obvious.

Ok then, the Nicotine infilatrates every part of the body. Carbon Monoxide binds with Hemoglobin to effect oxegen flow round the body. Carcinogens can effect growth, cause abnormal reproduction and can lead to cancer. It can effect the immune system. The body produces antioxidants to help repair damaged cells. Smokers have lower levels of antioxidants in their blood than do nonsmokers.

And it smells so your out of pocket on laundry bills and your breathes tend to reek

You're not helping this ex-smoker.... I meant why does it have to be bad, rather than the thoery of what it does. Why can't it be as good as it is cool to smoke?

Its not really a theory more than a fact but thats not the question asked. Why can't it be good. It can be fantastic. The only price is the potential of a very uncomfortable end with the coughing and phelgm and stuff. But hey you might never smoke and end up that way. So you choose. Enjoy your vices and be damned the consequences or live all proper and hope that you live to 140 and die whilst playing a 5 a side game of astroturf soccer after scoring the winning goal

What created the universe? And if we are to believe scientists and the whole Big Bang theory, how did the Big Bang happen from nothing?
