Playing in a new municipal ground with all mod cons?? I'll take thatm genuine supporter and all!! Name the place New Oriel and make a bunch of new heroes and memories. It would be a wrench but sentiment only goes so far. Now if the old place was getting a facelift with the council footing the bill - well it would be like winning a double for football ground development!
Jokes aside, It's lovely to play in a new stadium and facilities are fairly good by LOI standards, and hopefully all local authorities get in on the act, but it's always sad losing a historic ground, not just in LOI but anywhere, and you need to be careful what you wish for, a municipal stadium in Louth will have dual tenancy with the Drogs and you cant make a bean yourselves out of the ground, you're only tenants, Rovers pay rent and while it might be a good deal, we can't organise anything else in the stadium to fundraise without permission, something you don't have to do now, but in a tenancy you're at the mercy of the council.

It is always better in the long term for a football club to own its own ground than to not own it.

Owning an appreciating asset is financially smart. It's also commercially and organisationally smart, as it makes you master of your own destiny.

Yes - it entails costs and maintenance etc etc. Ad you have to protect it (easily done) in case the club goes bust. But any public funding it attracts goes into YOUR asset.

It's broadly analogous to owning your home or renting someone else's all your life.

Barrett was manager of Limerick FC when the club folded in 2019. Last Saturday, it was confirmed that Treaty United - who entered the Women's National League last season - had received a licence to compete in a men's 10-team SSE Airtricity League First Division. Barrett was the man named in charge.

Treaty replace Shamrock Rovers' reserve side, who played in the division last season following the withdrawal of Limerick FC. For Barrett, it's a welcome lift for the area.

"It's fantastic for the whole midwest region and beyond because senior soccer was part of Limerick's history for over 80 years," he told RTÉ's Morning Ireland.

"To have it broken last year was terrible for the city and the region. Now we can move forward and look forward to the season. We have nothing to lose. Let's have a go."

Barrett stressed the importance of clubs like Limerick, and domestic football generally, receiving sustained backing to survive and propser.

"It has been a rollercoaster - the whole history of Limerick FC actually and Limerick senor football," he said when reflecting on Limerick's demise and Treaty's rise.

"That probably correlates with the whole League of Ireland.

"There always seems to be trouble or a rollercoaster for clubs, just look at Cork - a few years ago they were champions. I think it's a League of Ireland thing really. It needs more support and it needs more backing.

"A national plan needs to be put in place to make senor football better and football in general better in this country."
Squad / signings will be a mix of local players with some LOI experienced signings also hopefully & should be announced soon going by his radio interview also.

So, we're back, another new name and albeit tempered expectations, Limerick have skin in the LOI game again. Did ye miss us ?

    Yes
My last game down in Limerick was Grahme Burkes farewell game before heading off to Preston.
Scored a goal and had a free kick saved by a worldie from Brendan Clarke
Big Rovers contingent behind the goal

Treaty United announcing their players/staff over on Twitter in the last little while. There's more names there than I expected to recognise.
The ball is round and has many surprises.

Marc Ludden is a decent first division left back. His long throw ins are a weapon, good crosser of a ball too. Tadgh Ryan was very good at Galway Utd a few years ago aswel.
The competitiveness of the First Division, imo, has improved year on year over the past few seasons and it's looking good for this one too.

Yeah he has a lot of loi experience from his few spells with Galway Utd and Mervue since 2010!
Gary Cronin is he the right man to manage Longford Town?

Surprisingly strong squad. Is there some bit of money there I'm not aware of? All the noise seemed to indicate it would be an amateur outfit.

Was pleasantly surprised myself too, fair bit of experience at the level there.

I would say the fact Junior/Intermediate leagues aren't running has worked heavily in their favour.

Bar any players who could have maybe signed for another 1st Division club, the only alternative is to not play this year.

I'd say it's more that amateur football is off and LOI teams are the only chance for lads to play. Would expect numbers to drop off in July but if Treaty are doing well guys might stay.
