Promising centre half. Tall. Wins his headers and his tackles, ones he has no right to win. Can also play a bit and does, as you’d expect from anyone who has come through Arsenal’s academy, but obviously we’re not talking Beckenbauer. Average pace for a young central defender. You’d worry if there’s more injuries or if he bulks up a bit as he enters his mid 20s, he could end up a bit slow running and/or sluggish on the turn given his height. Hasn’t really played much 23s football for Arsenal, mostly due to injuries over the past few years.

Nathan Collins and Lee O’Connor were the first choice for the initial 2018/19 U19 squad at centre back. But they were called up to the 21s by the time of the elite phase which gave the likes of Oisin McEntee and McGuinness a space in the squad. He came off the bench in the first two games and started the third alongside McEntee against the hosts, Russia. Scored, I think it was a header from a freekick or corner, and looked very good.

(Tom Gaston was great in that game as well, so composed and skilful at right back, but has never been seen in a green jersey since. Left Bordeaux to play in the USA which was a strange move. Also everyone talks about Afolabi and Connell and the waste their moves were, but Reghba, Bolger, Ledwidge and McEntee are also guys who haven’t really had any game time. They’re all 19/20 now, so the clock is very much ticking.)

Anyway, with Stoke not realising Nate Collins and with Lee O’Connor playing centre midfield due to Coventry (West Ham), Connell (Celtic), Bolger (Cardiff), Knight (Derby), Smallbone (Southampton), Parrott (Spurs, then playing no.10 for ireland), O’Reilly (Preston) all being withdrawn by their clubs, McGuiness and McEntee played all four games in the Euros. Both were impressive and solid albeit raw.

FWIW McGuinness grew up in England and also eligible for the north due to a Derry born father. Not sure where he was born.

You’d imagine the centre halves at the front of the queue for the next 21s campaign will be Collins, McGuinness, McEntee and Omobamidele.

I think these have been highlighted recently but said I'd post them here. It's not a stick to beat him with but more of an interesting insight into the life or perspective of a dual national.

His brother's twitter feed features a shamrock in his bio. And then tweets about the English football team: https://twitter.com/mcguinness21/sta...589830144?s=19

And at the same time tweeting about our side: https://twitter.com/mcguinness21/sta...518963712?s=19

There's even a tweet stating his pride at his brother on his England debut: https://twitter.com/mcguinness21/sta...932751872?s=19

As I said, not a stick to beat him with. It's just an interesting insight.

I don't see any indication that Mark has played for England, only Ireland U19. Am I wrong, or is there another brother who plays for England?

Only two games in but it sounds like he has made an excellent start to his senior career. Doing it at a decent level for his age as well.

Should be straight into our Under 21 squad once the current crop become overage next year. Him and Collins could be a very strong partnership.

First senior goal for McGuinness, as he nabs the winner against Burton - we seem to be on the verge of having a good group of young centre-halves at our disposal - https://www.bbc.com/sport/football/55598499

Joins Mick McCarthy on a 3 year contract at Cardiff.

Pity to see one of our better prospects at a big club leave for the Championship, but if it means he is getting regular football at the age of 20 then I guess it is a good thing. Fingers crossed the move works out.

I think it's a great move for him. He wasn't within a mile of the Arsenal team, he has a realistic chance to establish himself at Cardiff. From what I've seen of him at Under 21 level recently he's good enough to do it, but it might take a couple of seasons. Then hopefully he can kick on from there to the Premier League, either with Cardiff or through a transfer like Collins is doing.

    Agreed.

Heck, if Kelleher got a similar move, we'd be quite happy.

Hopefully it's a good season for him. Sheffield Wednesday should be up there challenging for promotion. Had his iffy moments last season but Cardiff in general were poor. Can come back next season and show Morrison that he deserves to start or hopefully get a loan to another championship team.

Sheffield Wednesday won away at Accrington Stanley (0-1) today. Dom Howson, soccer writer for Yorkshire Live, rated Mark McGuinness 7/10. "Another impressive showing from the Cardiff City loanee. Was strong in the air and maintained his concentration levels throughout. Looked a cut above most of the players on the pitch".

He has been very impressive so far this season and is a regular in a promotion chasing side and has won over a hard to please fanbase.
