Louie Barry F Sheffield United (loan from Aston Villa) b.2003

Confirmed by Heimir that he has made himself available for selection for Ireland, but hasn't made the 23 man squad this time around. Hasn't played competitively for England at any level that I'm aware of, so it's not a switch as such. However, as he's over 21, if we cap him at any time in a competitive fixture he would be cap tied to Ireland.

Plays centre forward and left wing and had a great goalscoring record in League 1 with Stockport. Hasn't replicated that yet in the Championship, but has only played a small number of games at that level.

Both him and Tom Cannon are currently with Sheffield United, but neither has been playing centre forward with Barry on the left and Cannon either on the right or on the bench. I'm not at all convinced that Ruben Selles will do much with Sheffield United, so it may be that we don't see the best of Barry until after he has been moved on.

Whatever Chris Wilder can or can't do with the Blades, Barry has not impressed him; the Aston Villa 22 year-old has only started once under Wilder. Football League World have claimed more than once that Barry is one of three players who will have their loan transfers ended by Wilder next month. The question is: will Villa persevere in trying to find Barry a successful loan spell in the Championship, or offload him to League One, where he has previously done very well?

I'd imagine he'll go back to League 1. He has had two cracks at the Championship now and it hasn't worked out - there's a big difference between scoring goals in the Championship and in League 1 as we're seeing with Aaron Connolly. If that's the highest level Barry can score at right now, that's where he should play (with the caveat that if he went to somewhere like the Eredivisie he'd probably score loads, but he's less likely to go there).

Lee Hendrie (Sky Sports) was quoted yesterday by Football League World as backing Derby County to sign Barry in January. Hendrie thinks the John Eustace style at Derby would suit Barry, who has failed to impress Chris Wilder at Sheffield Utd. Last season, however, the 22 year-old was only the fourth player to win the EFL Young Player of the Month award twice.

After just nine appearances under Chris Wilder, Barry is now back in the midlands for treatment on a knee injury and Wilder is negotiating an end to the Villa player's loan spell at Sheffield Utd. (Sheffield Star, today).

He should have stayed with Stockport, a club on the up, and he was scoring plenty of goals there. They'd be in the Championship if he'd stayed there last season (beaten in playoffs in L1)

I hate this kind of attitude which seems to be pervasive among Irish supporters at times. You need to go to higher levels constantly and push yourself against better players. If you fail so be it but any player who would choose an extended stay at Stockport will ultimately be irrelevant in the context of our national team.
