    WYW v Cork

Wexford conceded what may turn out to be a very important three points in Ferrycarrig tonight as they paid the price for giving away too many chances to their opponents in the first half and then being unable to break down a resolute Cork defence in the second which was ably marshalled by an excellent Maria O’Sullivan in the Cork goal. Wexford started with Kiev, Lynn, Lauren Dwyer, Nicola, Lolly, Aoibheann, Edel, Lauren Kelly, Kylie, Ellen and with Aisling up front. Wexford started the stronger with Edel Kennedy and Aoibheann Clancy largely bossing the midfield. However, it was Cork who took the lead on ten minutes with their first attack when Saoirse Noonan struck what looked like an innocuous enough shot from the left wing, but two players, one from each side, and Kiev Dollard in the Wexford goal all seemed to converge on the ball at the same time, and all put each other off to enable the ball to roll on into the corner of the Wexford goal. Kylie Murphy soon had an effort to get the Wexford equaliser which went a few yards wide before following it up by volleying past O’Sullivan on the second attempt to make the score 1-1 after fourteen minutes. Wexford’s Ellen Molloy then slightly pulled a shot a yard wide of the Cork goal before Eabha O’Mahoney restored Cork’s lead with a smasher from twenty yards out to put Cork 2-1 ahead. Cork then followed this up with two efforts on goal following a corner but Kiev Dollard in the Wexford goal kept both out with reflex saves. Cork’s Lauren Egbuloniou then had two chances to increase Cork’s lead but put a shot a yard wide of one post and a header a yard wide of the other Wexford post. Two late Wexford efforts before the end of the half by Lauren Kelly and Edel Kennedy also went wide and Wexford were probably happy enough to go in only a goal down. 2-1 to Cork at half-time.

Wexford did most of the pressing in the second half but found it hard enough to make any impression on the Cork defence with Maria O’Sullivan doing well between the sticks for Cork. With 20 minutes gone, Wexford looked for a free which never came leaving Egbuloniou to have a one-on-one with Kiev Dollard, but the latter pulled off an excellent save to keep the game with only a goal in it. Subs for Wexford were Ciara Rossiter and then Vanessa Ogbonna and Blessing Kingsley with Kira Bates Crosbie also coming on as the final sub for Wexford, but half-chances which fell to Ellen Molloy and Kylie Murphy weren’t converted and Cork finished up narrow winners by 2-1 with Wexford unable to break down the Cork rearguard in the second half. Best for Wexford on the night were Aoibheann Clancy, Edel Kennedy and Ellen Molloy.
