I don't like how that says that he has been "invited". No indication that he has accepted the invite. They could have invited Liam Delap too!

Interesting re Roughan. I see he was on the bench for Lincoln as recently as two weeks ago. Ledwidge and O'Connor look shy of making a breakthrough there and surely the latter will move on.

So the same player then? Wonder what the story is there - he was in the Lincoln first team earlier in the season.

Yeah, it's the same player. Would be some jump from Lincoln to Southampton

The Imps forum for some more background. On a pro contract so Southampton need to cough up a bit for him. They don’t seem to be too worried as they haven’t seen him since before Christmas https://forums.vitalfootball.co.uk/t....114693/page-7

Seems like a shortsighted view - but that's maybe the reality further down the divisions. Would have thought most clubs' fans would want to keep a 17 year old who has played in the first team and looked decent rather than sell for a few hundred thousand.

Roughan would potentially join two other Irish left backs at Southampton in O'Connor and Ledwidge, but I think both are out of contract and may be both let go next month, so perhaps that's where the interest/under 23 space has come from.

From what I know of him he would be more highly rated than either of those two, and Southampton is a good club for a young player to develop at. Obviously he wouldn't be expecting to be anywhere near the first team for a few years though, even if he does well.

Interesting comments from the manager at Lincoln. He's essentially saying that Southampton have been interested in Roughan for a while and that he's not in the team so they're willing to entertain genuine interest:

“I want to improve the team and make it better than what it is at the minute. As he’s not in the team at the minute, it’s a bit of a balancing act.
“If his pathway is away from Lincoln and it’s the right thing for the club, we’ve had those honest conversations with him.

Interesting comments. As Eirambler says, could be the reality further down the divisions where Lincoln aren't able to give this lad first team games or top level coaching plus U23 and U18 games so he's between two stools. Loan him to the National League? Or sell him, extract some cash and include a sell-on clause?

It was always a strange club for him to go to for starters - I remember reading that he had other options but Lincoln were the only ones who would help him to do his leaving cert so his parents went with them.

I know if I was a Lincoln supporter I'd be hoping that they'd loan him to League 2 or the National League to help him develop, but the fact that they're letting him actually travel to another club for trial games suggests they're keen to sell if they get an anyways decent offer.

Funny that they would take hom on trial seeing as he has played league football in league 1 this season surely that's how they would make a decision . Imagine the uproar if Johnny Kenny went over on trial to Southampton under 23s people would be saying how disrespectful to the league of Ireland it would be

Very interesting. I see it here now as his Instagram story. Sharing a screenshot of his mother's tweet.

It isn't all that long ago that he posted this on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/p/BxEoJdZA..._web_copy_link

Good to see him coming in anyway. I don't think it necessarily means he's committing to us at this stage but with the rules as they are we have to be proactive with dual eligible underage players and try to pick up as many as we can. As ever, we'll win some and we'll lose some.

Does anyone know if there is a list of the names or some of the names involved? I presume nothing offices though.

Are there any more notable names?

It’s understandable that we would need a camp to look at players as we have had 3 u17s and u19s to look over due to COVID.

I don't think there's an official list yet, hopefully the FAI will publish one. Just based on a combination of names mentioned online and players who would be the right age for a call up these would be the kinds of players you might expect to see involved:

    Cian Coleman (Leeds)
    Ben Andreucci (Leeds)
    Owen Mason (Mansfield)
    Josh Clarke (Bournemouth)
    Anselmo Garcia McNulty (Wolfsburg)
    Sean Roughan (Lincoln)
    Andrew Moran (Brighton)
    Evan Ferguson (Brighton)
    Olamide Ibrahim (Derby)
    Omotayo Adamarolo (Crystal Palace)
    Leigh Kavanagh (Brighton)
    Sinclair Armstrong (QPR)
    Bosun Lawal (Watford)
    Josh Okpolokpo (Huddersfield)
    Aaron O'Reilly (Aston Villa)
    Calum Kavanagh (Middlesbrough)
    Ollie O'Neill (Fulham)
    Johnny Kenny (Sligo Rovers)
    Joshua Ireland (Stoke)

Wolfsburg's director of sport said that there's been no contact for Anselmo Garcia MacNulty, and he will train with the senior team next season, and might go on loan to their associate club, STK St Polten

Chelsea considering move for 17-year-old Irish defender https://the42.ie/5439557

Roughan going for a trial at Chelsea now. Interesting.
