It's more to do with the players style than the league style. Some world class players will excell in one league due to a number of reasons - the team they are with, the style of play the team uses, the managers tactics, the oppositions tactics etc etc
Most people could see that Diego Forlan was a decent footballer who never really had the luck in front of goal when at Utd. He's taking his chances now and is probably actually getting less chances to score at Villareal than he would at Utd but their going in for him at the moment and the team style of play suits him.
His strike rate at United would only have been slightly affected by the frantic pace of the game, it's all the other elements I've mentioned above that would probably also have had to work against him which they obvioulsy aren't now in Spain.
