CTID proximity is an element but it is also the overbearing and sheer force of the EPL marketing drive. I know I am mentioning Slovenia all over the place but I have noticed a tendency of football fans there to like the EPL above all foreign leagues too despite bordering Italy. Serbs I have talked to too. EPL games are on the national TV over there live on Saturdays or at least they were. The damn thing is everywhere.
By the way it is possibly the best league in the world in some senses. It is really a toss up between Serie A, La Liga and the EPL. Serie A is very much a league depending on your tastes. La Liga has more strength at the top of the league but the bottom two thirds of the EPL is probably stronger. It certainly has a case for being the best. For the last several years they have had 4 teams going into the CL a privilege reserved for only 3 countries based on European performance over the last half decade.

It has been like that since before the EPL was even a concept for crying out loud. Certainly since the 1960's when English soccer started being shown via Piped TV and Communal Aerials on Televisions in this country via BBC NI and UTV and HTV/Wales . That was when the crowds at LOI matches began to decline.
As regards the Serbs, admission prices are also a major issue as they are about 10% of the average industrial wage there. Imagine if EL admission prices were about €57 and you might get some idea. Oh that's about the price of a ticket for the Premiership by the way at some grounds anyhow!

CTID I know what you are saying but this has been further compounded by the EPL. Games several times a day and several times a week. Super over hyper advertising and an actual imrpovement of English football from the early 90's where La Liga and Serie A were glamour leagues on a level above them to being in genuine contention for the world's top league has just made it worse. I understand the problems in Serbia but I am simply pointing out many countries show EPL on Saturday at 3 including ourselves on the national television when they have their own domestic leagues. The problem is bad enough to spread to other places without our proximity to make it worse.
its the most freely avaiable league to most people also a lot more exciting to watch , i prefere to watch english clubs playing than itailian or spanish girls diving all over the place .
and now its nearly back to being the best league in the world , as shown by 2 english club getting to the semis of the cl , and one winning it .
I agree that the marketing of the EPL is a huge factor in attracting people to watch it. Surely here the fact that so many Irish play in it has to be a major factor also.

For the record.... as an ex student of UCD I can say with real certainty that there were far more 'west brits' there than I have encountered elsewhere.
I reckon the two most obvious reasons people in Ireland support the premiership is because one, all our national side play there and in the Championship leagues and football supporters in Ireland like to watch and support football, no matter where its played, Dalymount park or in the jungles of Peru, the closest and best league just happens to be across the stretch of water between ourselves and britain.I can't speak for other countries but I think in this country it is a legacy of 800 years of domination by the British.
