I didn't know (or blanked completely) about Van Basten being offside, now I'll have to go through a Benjamin Button reverse therapy process.

And Brian Lenihan at the very front of the open bus as it made its way to the city centre, grinning and waving as if he had struck the winning goal v England. A pure gombeen act of political narcissism.

By haunt forever, I mean it still grates when you think about it, or see a clip or article or whatever. Not that you can't get out of bed in the morning. Come on man.

Bit of a difference there in fairness!

But still - time heals all. We did, as the guys say, win a game we should have lost, draw a game we should have won, and lost a game we should have drawn.

So overall - don't think we can have any real complaints, and those of us who (just!) remember it have some great memories.

Why sully that with depressive thoughts of what might have been?

I'm not claiming it's healthy to keep the baggage, but it is natural sometimes. I'm not even saying their overriding emotion should be regret rather than pride either, I was just surprised it didn't seem to rankle a bit more.

This is the sort of life sentence of hurt I expect from my sports people (watch til the end)

For Micko that's the one that got away, the unsolved case that haunts the retired detective who had taken an oath to find the killer.
