he is defo up there near the top any way , i would nt have seen enough of all the games to say one way or the other .
Any takers on who should get player of the tournament. I know theres gonna be people who say Shevchenko or Lampard or Crespo or even Maldini, but for me the most outstanding player of this tournament was the unfashionable Jamie Carragher. The reason I say unfashionable is because hes' no nonsense and just quietly gets on with what he's paid to do (defend).People say he's not a patch on John Terry or Rio Ferdinand or Nesta cause he can't score but hey if there was a better defender / player in this tournament. This guy died for the cause from the off and I think he above any player deserves that honour.Any takers..................

I would give it to Van Nistelrooy. Top scorer.

I'd agree with you re Carragher. Heart of a lion, only other contender would be Shevchenko for me.
The above is all opinion and based on personal experience. Unless stated otherwise it is not a dig at anybody, well probably none of you lot.

Thats who I would give it to and he is top scorer both of them are facts. I think the point of this thread is people say who they would give it to and thats my contribution.

Mine would go to Jamie Carragher too, he was quite brilliant in the heart of Liverpools defense putting every limb on the line to get vital touches on the ball to knock them out for corners etc, rarely made mistakes and always did the right thing.
Honorable mentions go to Marc Van Bommel, John Terry, Gattuso and Shevchenko.
Rooney for the debut hattrick??
Ronaldinho for that goal against Chelsea??
Kaka for that pass in the final, and pretty much every other assist he got??

If we must select a lionhearted player, then let us choose one who matches that description but can also play football (yes, they still exist) - Park Ji Sung of PSV.
My Team of the Tournament
Cech (Chelsea)
Cafú (Milan), Terry (Chelsea), Alex (PSV), Zambrotta (Juventus)
Park (PSV), Essien (Lyon), Lampard (Chelsea)
Ronaldinho (Barcelona)
Shevchenko (Milan), Adriano (Inter)
SUBS:
Dida (Milan)
Carragher (Liverpool)
Maldini (Milan)
Van Bommel (PSV)
Martins (Inter)
Drogba (Chelsea)

For me Marc Van Bommel has probably been the most impressive player I've seen play. Great on the ball and has a knack of breaking up play with petty fouls that don't get punished. He's a clever player and will do well whereever he moves

He's gone to Barca. Class player.Originally Posted by KarlosIRL

feckin vogels gone to milan too so he aint half bad. imagine wat psv could have done with robben and kezman in the team they would probably have won it!
I don't understand this signing at all. Milan are replete with quality DMs (Gattuso, Ambrosini, Pirlo - arguably more of a regista), and Vogel hardly represents a significant improvement over any of those players.Originally Posted by gustavo

milan for all their greatness probably dont have a great squad if you know what i mean they have a lot of ordinary players on the bench ie dhorasoo , serginho , inzaghi , kaladze , tomasson plus they have a habit of making strange signings so it kinda fits.
Shevchenko, Kaka' or Carragher for me.
Defo Carragher or Gerard IMO, its about time Carragher got a bit of recognition, the blokes a legend.

2005 - a great year for Irish football
carraghers got plenty of recognition this season i dont know of anyone who doesnt agree he has had a great season!
Liverpool are like Irish supporters they like to play the poor mouth and pretend they are down trodden. I agree taht Carragher has been excellent this season and he has been recognised as such. Quality season from a great professinoal
