Fair play to Liverpool - a win in their finest european traditions...

The problem is still with the FA, who laid it down in the PL rules at the start of the season. UEFA have a rule no automatic right to defend, because a maximum of 4 teams from one country. If the FA had left it open as the spanish federation did this wouldn't even be an issue.

I suppose you can't blame the FA for thinking a team so shít to finish outside the top 4 could win the Champions League, but ultimately it's at their door. I can't believe so many have brought the FA spin....

Liverpool of course have waved Goodbye to Michael Owen, and when Cisse was replaced by Pongolle, the bite went from the Reds attack. By that time, Spurs were in the ascendancy anyway. Liverpool's other debut boy - Josemi - played at right back, whilst Steve Finnan took up a right wing slot. Carragher played next to Hyppia, and the back-in-favour Riise made up the back four.

Josemi's suspension meant a recall of Steve Finnan in his natural position at right back. Apparently, Benitez had now begun to realise what everyone else has known for ages – Salif Diao is not good enough, no matter how much he pleads with the fans and manager to be given time.

Steve Finnan was signed by former Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier for £3.5million in the summer of 2003. Although he's a right-sided defender he's also quite comfortable on the wing. Attacking down the right-hand side is a big part of his game.

In 1974/1975 the mighty Bayern München won the European Cup. That same season they finished 10th in the Bundesliga. Maybe they should have been forbidden from playing in Europe the following season and adding their 3rd pot on the trot?

The rules have changed since then . We could spend all day dragging up events from the past, this is now. Liverpool have not met the criteria needed, so they shouldn't get in IMO.

ffs, and that makes a difference how? Different rules, and how many times the problem isn't the winners defending, it's the numbers from a particular country. It's the FA that have bottled the decision and shifted the blame (very effectively it seems) to UEFA.

Not met the criteria. As I said all title holders, no matter the sport, should have an automatic right to defend their title. This is just one mess crated by the English FA and UEFA. To sort this out they should let Everton still in as they met the criteria and enter Liverpool in the preliminary rounds. At least then all are satisfied, plus a smaller club gets an unexpected windfall playing against Liverpool.
I am not a Liverpool fan, but the club deserves to be in.

kewell v giggs !! both left wingers
smicer v rooney both attacking midfeilders
finnan v ronaldo both right sided players ( finnan plays on the right wing too i just dont know who plays on liverpools right recently ) gerrard v keane ....both central midfeilders and captians so all pretty similar
Biscan had a much better season than Saha, who has done little at utd.
1 decent season at fulham is all he has had(and lets not forget about his failed spell @ newcastle)... biscan has a champions league medal. anyway my point was they were not like with like.

Kewell and smicer have not played for most of the season while giggs and rooney have. Garcia plays on liverpools right but the way, not finnan... so maybe stojkovic has a point

OK so he played on the right wing twice last season, first game of the season last August and once against Israel. I believe the Charlton quote, impressive and all as it is, tells you that he did in fact play at right back that day. Keep trying though.

Early rounds for the CL holders, Liverpool?

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/foot...ol/4613695.stm

Uefa president Lennart Johansson will contact everyone on his Executive Committee on Tuesday to arrange a vote on Liverpool's Champions League bid.
Liverpool finished fifth in the Premiership and have not qualified for the competition but Johansson says they should defend their title next season.
Johansson also believes they should come in at the first qualifying stage.

not read through the whole thread so may be this has been covered, however was chatting to a mate last night who put forward this.

If Bayern Munich had won the CL this year and finished 4th in the league they would have been able to defend it next year.

Germany only have 3 teams in the CL and Uefa have imposed a maximum of 4 teams per country therfore BM would have been allowed to defend it.

Meanwhile England would still have their 4 teams in it. Therefore an extra team has been admitted.

Doesn't this mean its a big deal over nothing. Both Liverpool and Everton can get in the CL????

    Why all the who har???

you have answered it yourself , germany have 3 clubs entered england have 4 , you can have a max of 4 .

its not creating an extra place that is the problem its the having 5 places for english clubs that is the problem when you are only alloud 4 .

plus allowing them in will reduce the amount of money for the 4 clubs that bothered to compete properly in the league should get .
