    Wexford FC v Galway

Wexford will probably be happy with the point as they battled hard to keep Galway at bay in Ferrycarrig tonight. Wexford made two changes from the previous week with Conor English and Craig Giles coming in and started with Murphy, Tobin, Carroll, Cleary, Giles, Manahan, Crowley, Kavanagh, Smith, Simon and English. Remarkably, the word around Ferrycarrig was that Galway had made nine changes from the previous week. Good conditions for football for a change and Galway took advantage as they began the match like a train. Taking the tip-off, Galway took about five or six passes to get the ball in the Wexford net, but it was ruled out for handball given by the assistant referee. Galway continued to press hard with Wexford unable to get the ball out of their own half and on eleven minutes a good Galway move ended up with a miscue in front of the Wexford goal resulting in an easy save for Murphy. On 16 minutes, Galway’s O’Halloran had a volley from an acute angle which flashed well beyond the opposite post. Galway’s Curran then picked up a yellow for a tackle from a fussy referee. Wexford’s Paul Cleary got in a last-ditch tackle to prevent a Galway run-in on the Wexford goal. Wexford’s first decent chance came on 24 minutes when Crowley had a free header but couldn’t keep it on target. Galway were, however, being very direct and Wexford began to get more into the game as the half progressed and reduced the pressure that the away side were putting on the home side’s goal. 0-0 at half-time.

Galway got the ball in the net again at the start of the second period but an early flag went up for offside. Other than that, Wexford looked fairly comfortable and pushed the ball around well but without really threatening Schlingermann in the Galway goal. Galway got a lot of crosses into the Wexford penalty area, but the quality wasn’t great for the most part. Cian Kavanagh for Wexford then managed a volley which went a few yards wide. Sean Roche replaced Kavanagh immediately afterwards for Wexford. Best chance for Galway came with seven minutes to go when a curling shot clipped the top of the Wexford crossbar and went wide. Within a minute, Galway’s Duggan had seen a straight red for a high challenge on Craig Giles who had to be substituted by Kristian Crawford. Five minutes of injury time failed to divide the teams and match ended 0-0. Best for Wexford were a solid defence with Kaleem Simon showing good touches and Conor English working hard against two monster Galway centre-halves. Just over 200 at the game.
